Weekly poll: do flagship chipsets still matter?

12 November 2023
The latest silicon brings higher performance and advanced features for image processing, game graphics and AI. But do you really need all that?

Processor and ram are both stuff which doesn't matter a lot but companies are forcing this on people like if it's the important thing

I will never buy a midrange phone, lol. I know they’re good enough today but I’ve always bought flagships and I’m too used to their unmatchable performance, reliability, and software/hardware support.

Inve, 12 Nov 2023I couldn't care less about them myself. I need call... moreapps nowadays are demanding on storage, so 32gb is limited for casual use. nowadays minimum should be 64 either 128. heck, you can even get 128gb storage phones for cheap. 32gb storage is no longer a thing anymore. unless you live in 2012 where 32gb is considered plenty.

StarfoxHUN, 12 Nov 2023I rather choose a phone with an older flagship soc than any... moreI have news for you pal this older flagship soc over current midrange is outdated logic in recent years

We have processors like the dimensity 8100 beating older soc flagship SOCs

And even the 7 +gen 2 these occupy midrange territory

Even worse the increasing pattern of this year's flagship soc being used in more midrange smartphone at the end of year cycle.. example the realme gt neo 6

you have to suffer, 12 Nov 2023how is the camera quality compared to midrange phones today?Assuming you're using flagship chipset from the last 3-4 years, I'd say no. Assuming software is well-written, that is.

Flagships tend to age better, newer midranges really have them beat only in terms of efficiency. If the user isn't demanding the latest and greatest performance then there's little reason to upgrade from an old flagship phone. Maybe newer camera setup or better display, but definitely still excellent for most daily use.

I don't care about pure performance, but rather efficiency. I only game on a PC so I could care less about phone gaming performance. That said, I am using a SD8G2 simply because it's powerful, efficient and has a QC modem.

Of course they do... it's enough to see how Pixel 8 struggles when it doesn't have internet connection to make all heavy task on Googls's servers

Flagship chipsets are important for gaming, however:

Smartphone screens are too small for immersive AAA games, and no advances in technology will prove otherwise in my opinion.
If you want a mobile solution for modern gaming buy a Switch or a Steam Deck.

Most Mid range to upper tier chipsets are perfectly fine for most people.

sumdumguy, 12 Nov 2023A year old high end chipset is definitely a better solution... moreMy SD 845(OP 6T) still holds up well today. Battery replaced and with Lineage OS 20 the performance is best. I can emulate up to PS 2, GameCube and Wii games

Smartphone Photography needs to improve. SoC seem to claim to get 20% om processors alone, and often way more in GPUs and NPU. And smartphone cameras have improved only marginally since Night Sight and HDR. It's rather disproportionate.
We probably need super leaps in smartphone glass (above and beyond ILC per millimeter in contrast, sharpness and resolution).

I rather choose a phone with an older flagship soc than any current midrange, but its really depending on the use if its matters. For the best camera, one would definetly need a newer chipset, especially with the AI boom. For gaming, i'd say getting an external cooler means infinitely more than the chipset itself, if you can cool it, even a 3/5 yo flagship chipset can be a nice gaming console. (or just go cloud gaming) Also here the resolution (and refresh rate) is another important thing, for an fhd+ phone you can get away with much less power compared to a wqhd+.
But for someone using it only for tiktok/ig/yt, communication and 2fa, the midrange is totally fine too.

All my needs can be satisfied with a midrange chipset and that includes MOBA gaming and occassional photo and video capture. All I want is a midrange SoC with flagship camera, LTPO screen, and large battery (atleast 6000mAh) with pricing around 400USD.

Of course! Flagship chipsets should (if not must) always matter! I can't use a potato phone that has a lot of stutter or lags or maybe at least a few rare occassional hiccups still can't be tolerated, since i am a heavy gamer and i want to play heavy games as almostly perfectly smooth as possible! We are all looking to the future here, and we can't afford to be left behind by just buying cheap budget phones or even weak chipset midrange phones nowadays! I'm a certified "perfectionist" so i would rather buy (as soon as possible) the most latest Flagship phone or tablet in the market today! And that really satisfies my life nowadays and i mostly enjoy a lot of it since i always got what i wanted! Not that i'm extremely rich but i can buy Flagship devices whenever i want to! Hahaha!🤣✌️👍

I couldn't care less about them myself.

I need calls and messages, web browser, banking, audio and video recording of ok quality, social media apps, and some occasional games.

I don't care if an app needs 3 seconds to start, and I don't keep my entire life recorded in the phone. 4 GiB RAM and 32 GiB storage is fine.

Any €150 to €200 phone is enough. Nothing gets better if I let Apple or Google rob me for another €1000.
