Weekly poll results: most people prefer older flagship chipsets

Not that they wouldn't get the cutting edge chip if the price is right, but more often than not it isn't. Mid-range chips have their fans too.

justasmile, 19 Nov 2023Nah. Even their snapdragon phones?Snapdragon 888, runs like an oven. It's inevitable since it's made by Samsung.
8th gen 1 has massive battery drain, doesn't overheat that much but still isn't as great as 8th gen 2 which is made by TSMC.

Snapdragon 870 user here. Motorola G100. Stock android, running perfectly and smoothly for any game I want. I don't need an upgrade for years to come.
And I can also purchase Xiaomi 12 for 380$ with SD 8th gen 1. Worth it ? meh.

      Even their snapdragon phones?

Still have and currently using my samsung galaxy note 9. Which is a SD 845. It may have hiccups and such. But it still performs the things that I wanted on the device. Although, the screen and the battery definitely needs a replacement. Problem is its still expensive!

Yes, getting flagship phone with best chipset at time will make your phone last 5 years easily, considering we are in the era where phones are as fast as regular laptops.

Pretty sure there's gonna be some kind of Qualcomm vs MediaTek war going on in the comments somewhere.

But that should not be an excuse for manufacturers to start using 3 year old chipsets on their $1000 flagships because „it’s good enough for most people“. It’s a good chip but only for $300-400 or maybe $500 phones.

Ellen Dale, 19 Nov 2023Some older ones are still relevant today and will be a few ... moreHow often do we have to tell: Newer chips are not just better for current day performance, but also for efficiency and longevity. It’s not like a phone camera where the one on a 10 year old phone is still serviceable today and the newer one is just nice to have. Or a car where the old one still drives just fine but a newer one has more features. Snapdragon 801 was great when it came out, now it’s barely serviceable even if user behavior didn’t change (for example: YouTube, web browsing, WhatsApp, playing clash of clans). And doing these tasks today, it will get hot and chew through battery because it has to work much harder for the newer app versions. Also, better efficiency will lead to longer battery life even today and not only be noticeable years later.

I do not see that the title of the article faithfully represents what is asked (and therefore what is answered) in the survey. They are different formulations, “still matter” is not the same as “prefer”.

                                    "most people"

You mean most tech savvy people which means 2% of the world population

                                    The vocal MINORITY strikes again

If one doesn't know any better you would assume popular opinions in these tech spaces represents the masses... Lol no use words like " older flagship chipset" out in the wider world and watch the confusion on people's faces lol
