This is why your phone doesn't have a matte display

matte displays feel so much nicer to swipe around on. Much smoother and less fingerprint smudges. But the image quality goes down so much.
And it doesn't really prevent glare, it just spreads the glare out a little more.

I'm rocking a matte screen protector on the Galaxy Z Fold5 inner screen. All due to stock screen protector is a fingerprints magnet and hard to clean without proper screen microfiber wipes.
The color a little bit dull but in return, the screen is free from fingerprints and smudges. If the inner screen getting dirty, I can clean it with just my shirt

So here's a mediocre to low quality display and that's the reason why matte displays are worse on smartphone?
Burning retina level of brightness is better than a display that does not reflect the light in the first place?
Did you ever tried to use both with direct sunlight?
I did, good quality matte display still readable, hight quality glossy display blinding.
The color are less vibrant?
Well yes, compared to the fake oversaturated colors of the average smartphone the real accurate color of a decent matte monitor could seem muted.
Less cresp details?
With the hight pixel density of smartphone may be, but I prefer to see really close up comparisons of two otherwise identical displays.

While all the phone screens are glossy, I have yet to find a glossy monitor (apart from Apple), matte coating is terrible, but still cant seem to understand why there isn't any glossy monitor manufacturer...

personally i will never buy a laptop,tv or monitor with a glass screen. it's such a headache haveing to find a spot where you aren't looking back at yourself with out the brightness haveing to so high that you start to actually burn your retinas. phones i understand the glass top so i stick a matte protector on it straight away.

"we don't really see ourselves recommending a phone with a matte screen to the casual user and this extends to include the TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G"
Gsmarena's logic: let's take an inherently niche product and assess why a niche implementation is not good for the masses ....lmao
Why not also make and article why you cannot recommend niche rugged smartphones to the masses too
Gsmarena could have tested this display in unique ways such as:
1)Any possible battery life impact
2)impact on the eyes /psychology in a distraction bright coloured app era
3)if the display impacts frame rates that they alluded to in the first impression for 4k video playback
4) any possible strength whatsoever
But gsmarena just can't resist the urge of reviewing everything under the same generic standards.. keep judging a fish on its ability to climb trees

I got a matte screen protector for my phone recently, and it's absolutely amazing. The screen looks nicer, and got much easier to read, with no reflections.
It's especially amazing in dark mode. I used to avoid dark mode because I could see my reflection and my surroundings sometimes much better than whatever was actually displayed on my screen. It looked horrible. With a matte screen protector, dark mode finally looks incredible.
The article says that some phones have such bright screens that they overpower any reflections, but that only works if they're displaying something uniformly bright. If they're displaying something darker, or something with bright and dark areas, the dark areas are still going to reflect stuff.
Maybe my next phone is going to be one with a matte display like the TCL one in the article, but it has really low specs. They should release something with midrange or upper midrange (Snapdragon 7 level) specs, and I'll totally buy it.

Matt frosted are nasty dead colours, you want triple layer shine like on Bentley and Rolls Royce, the shimmering glitters can bee seen from miles.™

'The lack of optical clarity is not helped by the fact that the TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G LCD doesn't get overly bright either. We measured around 492 nits by maxing out the manual brightness slider.' This is the exact same manual max brightness as the Xiaomi 13 ultra which is the top ranked phone in your database so it can't be that that bad

1st thing i do with any phone i get is to buy a matte screen protector for it. i can't stand being blinded/distracted by reflections. in day it's so much more legible and in dark i can take the brightness down to the lowest it goes and not hurt my eyes.

I bought a matte screen protector for iPhone 13 Pro. Love it. Amazing for cutting our glare/ reflections and still plenty sharp/ bridge. Yes, it definitely does impact contrast and colours not as vibrant, but it doesn't bother me. Also, massively reduces fingerprints
