Weekly poll: can the Asus ROG Phone 8 find a place in your pocket?

14 January 2024
The gaming phone has been reformed to be better for casual users. It's still a powerful gaming phone and now has features like an LTPO display.

All im asking is for a gaming phone to compete. Nubia does it the best. So ROG won't sell as they expect.

If you thought the Nothing Phone 2 was overpriced, think again.

Anyway, it's not really for me. It still provides 2 os upgrades and 4 years of security updates for this pricing, which may be enough for you, but not me.

Buying one. Already have been to the shop to check when the embargo will be lifted for the sale of the phone. Awesome phone. I used to have a red magic device. It was a gaming phone first. Then phone second. Camera phone last. Now I have the Redmi K50G. Awesome phone. Punch hole yes. Not a problem for me on PUBG at all. Now. Hopefully by next month I will have the RoG 8 Pro. It's a phone that suits me. And what I like. Don't care what anyone else thinks.

This is just sad, ASUS once created the Google Pixel Phone for customers with little money to spend, now they're victims of getting broke.

Overpriced for a regular phone, while not being a unique gaming phone anymore. Simply no.

I own a ROG phone 5, I really do love the device for its uncompromised screen and speaker setup, but it has its flaws - all the small ribbon connectors easily unseat themselves if you drop the phone, even with a good case on. I have had to have the phone taken apart and plugs reseated by a specialist repair shop to get my cameras working again after a drop, and now the fingerprint, headphone jack and haptics aren't working, so it needs another repair. I think Asus have made progress with the ROG Phone 6 and 7 to fix these issues, and have also stiffened up the chassis which was needed based on my experiences with the ROG Phone 5. Asus' software support and their objections to rooting are really poor, I'm disappointed with them doubling down on 2 years of support only.

I was waiting to see what the ROG Phone 8 would be like, but losing backwards compatibility with the Kunai and not announcing a replacement for that product, including a holepunch in the screen, and choosing a downward firing bottom speaker is just madness. Why would I pay over $1000 when I could buy another flagship for less money and have more software support, more hardware parts available, better warranty, a bigger case/accessory ecosystem and still have pretty similar performance?

IP68 is cool, wireless charging is cool, new LED matrix looks slick, new rear styling is great, OIS cameras, lighter weight and smaller footprint is all great stuff - but the dimension change, holepunch camera, and speakers leaves legacy ROG phone owners wanting more. I understand Asus wants to do all of this to sell more units but I just don't think it's compelling enough for a non-gamer to go away from a Galaxy, Pixel etc.

I think I'd purchase a ROG phone 7 instead of a ROG phone 8 if I was forced into a choice.

The Christmas holidays left my pocket empty hahahaha

I think the ROG Phone 8 is a very interesting device. It takes the good things about the ROG phones and puts it in a more daily driveable package. I like the new camera, rear AniMe Display and 2500 Nits peak brightness. The downgrades over the ROG Phone 7, the 500mah smaller battery and hole punch, don't annoy me too much.

I will buy one, but only if the speakers of this new device are as good as previous ROG Phones. It really annoys me that they've removed the front facing drivers, as this was a special feature of the series, and the ROG Phone 7 sounded great with lots of bass. Can't wait to listen to Song 5 on your speaker test section in the review, currently no phone can match the ROG Phone 7 there.

Anonymous, 14 Jan 2024Hole is annoying, distracting and impossible to ignore. F... moreWell, would you look at that. It appears that I might be the only one than can simply ignore a small point on the screen? You should be thankful that most smartphones have a circular, small punchole and not a much bigger pill-shaped one, like the iPhone 14/15's or the Magic 6s; those I would say that are too big to ignore, yes. But with a small punchole? You get used with it, simple. You can't? Then I'm sorry, but just a handful of complaints regarding the "distracting" punchole won't make companies switch immediately back to the bezels or the UDC. The UDC has to prove itself first and technology has to become better and more advanced, cause the average buyer cares for the selfie quality more than a seamless display.

I want those back.Yeah, and I want Huawei to be un-banned from the U.S. sanction, but that ain't happening, right? They just switched to the punchole, they're never switching back to the bezels. Best case scenario, you wait a few years 'till the UDC becomes good enough for these bigger companies to dare to use them. Till then, you better get comfy with the ROG 7
