What is a real use case when 4K 120 fps is a must (or a need)?
I am just wondering how it would help the average user base.

jiyen235, 19 Jan 2024I'm not sure but is HLG supported in any phones at all... moreiPhone records HLG and then wraps it into pricey Dolby Vision metadata container.
When it comes to mobile HDR video there is no significant difference between HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision because they all record from 10bit readout instead of 12bit or 16bit like RAW video off real video cameras. So HDR "format" on mobile video is nothing but a marketing game. Apple did Dolby Vision for marketing purposes and so do Chinese brands that just introduced DV. Samsung has pioneered HDR10+ so they are pushing it instead of HLG and so forth. It's meaningless really.
What matter to us a lot more is that you can't share HDR video through messaging apps without wrong conversion. These messaging apps do not accept any kind of HDR video and instead they transcode it into SDR in completely flawed fashion. And that's a big problem. It is a big problem cause you should always be recording HDR video on your phone due to maximized dynamic range readout but when you want to share it via RCS, Whatsapp, Signal, etc. you get washed out or underexposed video.
Manufacturers are trying to counter that with double exposure SDR video but that's just a stupid hack that introduces a lot of artifacts and other nasty stuff depending on the scene lighting conditions.

Meh, Samsung made a mistake as usual acting mindlessly and follow the sheep or shall I say the Fruit to the slaughter house. Video quality is still behind he Fruit despite all the hype and worst still they gave away their outright King leadership by dropping the long range zoom and settle for the middle range instead and be a commoner, why try so hard to be a Fruit Sammy should have just concentrate on improving the 10x Periscope Zoom extending its lead when it was the king, instead of giving its crown away, how shite is that.
Hardly, any gains from the 5x Optical (only slight improvements from 5-10x) but total loss anywhere from 30X onwards, Optical 10x Zoom from S23ultra kills it without a doubt.
BIG Sammy mistake they should have dropped the 3x as it is ancient & does little; could easily have been a crop of the 200Mp sensor and keep the 5x and 10x Zoom for Ultra versatility; now it is no longer an ultra just a commoner S24 Sheep Edition, lol.
Silly Sammy drop the ball and followed blindly, they were the king and they gave the crown of Long range zoom away; unbelievable!. They did the same mistake when they released the Samsung Watch5 Pro instead of the Watch5 Classic and ate their humble pie when buyers boycott the Watch5 Pro refusing to update; now we have Watch 6 classic and they dumped the Pro lol.
Buyers should skip s24U and wait for the S25Ultra instead, mark my words S25U will bring back 10x Optical after major backlash on S24u when actual buyers found their underperforming 5x optical zoom Vs the 10X optical for long range zoom.
Notice how so many early paid popular influencers on youtube never even dared to show anything beyond 30X in their camera test......I wonder why 🤣😂
Guess I wont be upgrading my S23 ultra as its a downgrade in my opinion 😆, other than after over-hyped AI which will be paid after 2025 and filter to the S23U anyway.

Anonymous, 18 Jan 2024Not true, iPhones always get huge coverage for the video de... more"iphones ... .... because of how well they manage to capture video for social media like Instagram and TikTok."
App makers optimize their inbuilt camera UIs for iOS and willingly do not optimize them for Android, so if you take a picture or video right from the app interface, it will be worse in Android. This can be solved by using the native camera app and uploading "manually".

LucasN82, 18 Jan 2024HLG ability gives you SDR and HDR in one source. Xperia 1V ... moreI'm not sure but is HLG supported in any phones at all? Besides, HLG is only slightly better than SDR, HDR is just superior in terms of how yk, the content looks. HDR is better than HLG and HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision are far better than even HDR. Both of those are backwards compatible with HDR so any phone that can play HDR can play those 2 formats. So basically what I'm saying is phones should target these 2 formats when available and optimise for it, realistic colours due to using DCI-P3 and a 1000-nit ish max brightness so that most phones can play it. Compare that to SDR and its limited 100-ish nit max luminance. Dynamic metadata can be used to further optimise the HDR 10+ or DV image and if not watchable on phones they can stick with the (still great) static metadata HDR. Does that not sound like an actual video camera in your pocket?
Also, Sony's video recording is good in terms of its qualities like sharpness, colours and stuff. But the only thing it sucks at is exposure, it is relatively overexposed (blown out highlights) and takes a while to change exposure. Maybe HLG would fix that.

I totally doubt Sony would embrace 8K video recording, so Xiaomi has the chance to make a proper alternative to the S24U with the 14 Ultra.

Anonymous, 18 Jan 20244k 120fps for the periscope (though not clear whether also ... moreDistortion? If you mean the warping caused by a rolling shutter effect, having a faster frame rate would do absolutely nothing to mitigate the effect. 120fps is useful if you just want to slow things down for a "cinematic" effect, but it has no influence whatsoever on the sensor readout speed.
