Probably a brain-dead take here, but I think some phone-makers including Samsung want you to be only able to get something that’s either budget or incredibly expensive. No in-between. I mean, look at what happened to the vanilla iPhone 14 and 15 and vanilla Galaxy models nowadays… I think it’s on purpose.

punmeisterone, 21 Jan 2024Since you mentioned that sensor wish list. Samsung's S... moreThat would be a very good approach actually. Let's just hope this is true, because otherwise Samsung will stay incredibly stagnant. Still, I would prefer a 200MP telephoto with an optically variable lens. Maybe someday they'll fit something like that to be used on a 1/1.5"-type sensor.

Maybe 1/1.12", but not for s25u, s26 or even s27u the earliest IMO.

Darth Caesium, 21 Jan 2024My other problem, though, is that Samsung is using smaller ... moreSince you mentioned that sensor wish list. Samsung's S25 Ultra is posed to come with the following. Take this with a grain of salt since it's coming from Weibo.
Main cam (25mm): 1" ISOCELL sensor with 0.8um pixels, able of up to 4x lossless zoom.
Ultrawide (12mm): 1/2" ISOCELL sensor with 0.8um pixels also, with 2x lossless zoom.
Periscope zoom (100mm): 1/1.5" ISOCELL HP3 like sensor with 0.5 pixels and 4x lossless zoom.
Basically Samsung is finally doing the camera setup feel like a more unified system, with sort of a 12-400mm lens approach.

IpsDisplay, 21 Jan 2024"The narrative that Samsung's Exynos is vastly in... moreexactly, everyone gives Samsung a slack cus it's Samsung but why should we? Especially when they sell such overpriced phones. Mediatek nowadays is as good as Snapdragon now for the most part. I want Exynos to get there too, Samsung just needs to focus on first perfecting the Exynos chipset through their midrange and S FE series and then create them for their flagships but oh well they want profits more than quality products and consumer satisfaction.

punmeisterone, 21 Jan 2024And you're right. There are murmurs coming from Weibo ... moreI'm thinking, do they even still need the medium telephoto? Main camera should be fine for up to 4x zoom, I'd rather want to see a periscope telephoto upgrade. (And bigger ultrawide, as you said)

punmeisterone, 21 Jan 2024And you're right. There are murmurs coming from Weibo ... moreMy other problem, though, is that Samsung is using smaller sensors in the face of the competition, and I heavily dislike that they're nowadays using a 23mm lens for the main camera. 23mm is too wide, but it also means that the zoom reach is less than on other phones with similar optical zoom capabilities because they are modelled after the 23mm main sensor. I wish they still used 26mm on the main camera (cause that's a very Samsung focal length, they still even use it on the selfie) while using 78mm and 130mm on the telephotos.

As I said before, people with a S22U-S23U should skip this one and wait for the S25U

To be honest, Samsung should've used the same IMX854 they used for the 5x periscope for the ultrawide and 3x zoom lens. That would've enabled them to bring lots of consistency like the Xiaomi 13 Ultra (since the IMX854 is very similar to the IMX858). But nope!

One other thing
I'm not buying the A.I marketing
Plus how are you guys at gsmarena gonna even review these features correct me if I'm wrong but has gsmarena even innovated their review structure to benchmark A.I performance??

The problem with the S24 series is that Samsung is holding back upgrades on purpose so that they can reserve these upgrades for future series. The S24 Ultra could've replaced the 3× telephoto for a 50MP 1/2.0"-type sensor (or an even larger one) and converted it into a periscope-style telephoto, but they obviously won't because then they can't do that on the S25 Ultra or the S26 Ultra. Same thing with the ultrawide, which is basically using the same sensor as the one on the S20 Ultra (S20 Ultra used a Samsung sensor that was the same size, while the S21 Ultra-S22 Ultra use the same-sized IMX573 and the S23 Ultra-S24 Ultra use the same-sized IMX574). They need a 50MP 1/2.0"-type sensor for the ultrawide, but they won't do it because they need to sandbag so that they can still offer "upgrades".
They should've done this:
•200MP, f/1.4-f/4.0 (10-step), 26mm (wide), 1/1.31"-type, 0.6μm, Quad Pixel multi-directional PDAF, Laser AF, OIS, staggered HDR, Dual ISO Pro
•50MP, f/1.4-f/4.0 (10-step), 13mm (ultrawide), 1/2.0"-type, 0.8μm, Quad Pixel multi-directional PDAF, staggered HDR, Dual ISO Pro
•50MP, f/2.8, 78mm (periscope telephoto), 1/2.0"-type, 0.8μm, Quad Pixel multi-directional PDAF, OIS, staggered HDR, Dual ISO Pro, 3× optical zoom
•50MP, f/2.8, 130mm (periscope telephoto), 1/2.3"-type, 0.75μm, Quad Pixel multi-directional PDAF, OIS, staggered HDR, Dual ISO Pro, 5× optical zoom

"The narrative that Samsung's Exynos is vastly inferior to Qualcomm's Snapdragon has been going strong for years and it's once again at the forefront today"
Well GSMARENA folks this is NOT a narrative, this has been objectively true for a long time now..
Harsh criticism is good for Samsung for them to improve themselves unlike enablers from the Samsung army that keep making excuses and defending them even when failing
If mediatek had to go through it people shouldn't go easy on Samsung either especially.. since they have their very own manufacturing process!

EagleEyed, 21 Jan 2024Personally I think the s23 ultra and s24 ultra are the best... moreTo be honest I'm also considering the S24 Ultra given the trade-in value making it cost almost like last year's S23 Ultra, especially given the software reliability that Samsung delivered on my S10+.
Though because of the cameras, I'm more on the fence with this and the Sony Xperia 1 VI. The only thing that makes me reluctant in buying a 1 VI is Sony's abysmal smartphone sales over the past years, which could lead (I repeat, COULD) lead to Sony axing their mobile division and going in the dust like LG and HTC.

Seems like the gsmarena team isn't aware of the anti reflection on the S24 ultra's screen
All they mention is 2600 nits brightness ..
Put any smartphone beside the S24 screen especially on AOD and you see a massive difference

Definitely the S24 Ultra is a good upgrade (especially the 50MP 5x periscope that can do 10x lossless zoom), but I miss the old days when Samsung used to make huge camera upgrades from generation to generation, like from the S6 to the S7, or from the S10+ to the S20 Ultra.
Also, shame on Samsung for leaving that crappy 3x 1/3.5" lens in place, it's a slap on the face given the price.
