End of an era: HMD is dropping its Nokia branding for smartphones

It's about time the Home of Mediocre Devices stopped besmirching the Nokia brand with their garbage rebranded Chinese ODM phones running a version of Android that's even worse than the iPixel (and that's saying something).
I just hope that, after 8 years of having their brand dragged through the mud, Nokia stops licensing it for any further smartphone manufacturers until they actually present them a device worthy of the brand.

Only because of stupid Microsoft. Had nokia only believed in symbian or just used android instead. I wish there would be a nokia ngage successor.

Give fair playing ground to Huawei and Nokia will be out of business even from 5G. They banned Huawei to give breathing space to Nokia.
This shows what happens if you do not keep up with the world trends. Same happened with Blackberry.

I will keep my hopes low, but I'll laugh a lot if suddenly HMD does a 180 and starts releasing proper devices.
It would mean the stone in the road was Nokia

As sad as it feels, let’s not forget this are also Finns (their hq in front of Nokia’s, Espoo). So I really hope they succeed. Branded as best suits that goal.

It neither surprises me nor saddens me since the Nokia of yesteryear has been dead for a decade...And the part that is working with networks no longer wants to know about that business saturated with telephones and I understand them

Good luck selling phones with HMD name. We have Samsung. No any other brand we need.

Anonymous, 31 Jan 2024Apple does not make good looking well speced phones. Apple... moreBecause fanboys buy iPhone to show off not that it is better. My hard earned money goes to Samsung and not that limited fruit.

I remember when tech media wanted to tell us that the Nokia 6 was better than the iPhone 6s, because Nokia was „back“ and it was the „iPhone killer“

I actually see this as a good thing: The Nokia that we knew 20 years ago is long gone. They're making network communications technologies, not phones. We need to let them go.
HMD using the licensed Nokia branding to make unremarkable phones is a bit disrespectful to the Nokia of old and disingenuous to consumers, even if 100% legal. So I really appreciate them dropping the branding. However, the HMD name itself has no real "ring" to it or widespread public recognition, so I'm curious to see where this whole situation leads.
