This article contains an incorrect statement.
Just making a reservation for purchase does not make the price JPY 39,800.
You need to switch from your current carrier to Ymobile and sign up for a high-cost communication plan at the same time to get JPY 39,800.
I don't know the power relationship between smartphone manufacturers and telecommunication carriers in other countries.
But in Japan, the telecommunication carriers have a very strong and distorted structure.

yalim, 21 Feb 2024one camera can do depth sensing, even 6 year old pixel phon... moreI don't understand these companies. If they want to bring costs down and make their higher-priced phones look more attractive, why not just have two sensors on budget phones, wide + ultrawide? While depth and macro sensors make phones look like they have really good cameras (average person thinks more cameras must = better photo, and higher MP must = better photo), they do have a cost to them, and when you can see just how many phones still use them, you have to wonder just how much money is being wasted here.
Hell, if you don't want the extra money, it could at least be used to have a slightly faster chipset; a slightly better camera sensor or OIS on the main sensor; a slightly brighter, sharper, faster, more colour accurate or more energy-efficient screen; a slightly better speaker setup; or even a slightly thinner phone for people that care about that kind of thing (I personally don't care unless it's more than 10mm).

This is a little misleading.
To get to $265 you NEED to sign a NEW contract with carrier.
So, not really a discount.

one camera can do depth sensing, even 6 year old pixel phone can do portraits with less than half the processing power. what's the point of the depth camera except wasting internal space?

moerutoukon, 21 Feb 2024Strangely enough, Japanese people buy iPhones like crazy ev... morethey didn't even pay attention to the back of the device. you may see small details at the bottom where it said "Made in China" sign. the reason why japanese buy iPhones or any apple product is the status symbol and brand value. i don't see what's special about them. other than just looking at fidget spinner camera style with black hole sensor, and glorified ipad with keyboard and touchscreen removed. if you know what i mean.
