The company itself was dying from the catastrophic decisions and ignorance of the key people.

Managing with a bare minimum amount of resources, is what both Nokia mobile and Nokia can do. If they can't keep up with the competition, they need to do something to stand out.

Shame on HMD for running the Nokia name to the ground and making zoomers think Nokia was landfill even back in the day.
Thank God to GSMarena & "vintage phone" reviewers on YouTube for their review repository and catalog that showcases the greatness of the name back in the day.
And for that, HMD shall forever remain the cheap & nasty device you avoid and disregard , regardless of their efforts in branding and marketing.
You , HMD, only exists so that carriers can entice people with free smartphones on a new contract , only to leave them disappointed by your quality and offered experience.
Into the trash it goes along with it's 108 mpx camera.

Their license with NOKIA Corp., will expire soon and I think that they aren't interested in renewing it. Hence, they are making their moves to establish their own brand "HMD". Still, it is said that their feature phones will carry the brand name NOKIA until the license's life. Also, there MIGHT be some Android phones in the brand name NOKIA as per the wish of HMD. As far as I am concerned, personally, I don't believe in Brand Names. I just only believe in the quality of the end product. If HMD releases devices to my taste, I will definitely go for it just for the bloat free software experience they provide. I just don't care about the Brand of pen I use but, rather I always care about what I write with it.

Anonymous, 28 Feb 2024Rebranding because their 2016-2026 contract with Nokia is e... moreIf you read a not so old article from gsma, you would understand. Hmd have killed the name they ruined. So nothing new from hmd is branded other than hmd.

Selling under name of nokia was much easier bc of it's history, the name HMD sounds like a disease or a virus. Phone market is boring these days because phones are same as they were before and they are short term products. Even a fraud like AI couldn't bring enough excitement to the market. Now they are gonna sell under this senseless name.

Welcome HMD to the real playground. You are making the wise move. The point is not about flagships anymore. People don't have that kind of money to expend on flagship devices because, of inflation and reduction in their disposable income and people who have deep pockets would definitely choose Apple, Pixel or Samsung flagship devices. The only way to create your own market is by introducing good budget devices with a single SONY 12 MP wide camera on the back and front (just like old Pixel devices) with good FHD LCD displays. Moreover, provide all most all sensors with at least 8GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage with a good Qualcomm SOC. Please don't go for the mediocre 108 MP camera. The quality of your bloat free software and the other features which I have stated would speak for itself on the long run. No one has understood that NOKIA is just a brand name which is just used for marketing purposes and the quality of mobiles manufactured by you is not driven by the brand name NOKIA. Wishing you Good Luck as always. I always wanted you to be the best at all times just for the software experience you provide though I never provided good reviews about your product at anytime and hope you would gracefully accept the reasons behind it. Wishing you GOOD LUCK again.

I wonder why the original Nokia doesn't want to come back? Nokia was a legend, and they are still loved in many countries especially in Asia.

Chinese phones are not of bad quality at all. The quality is improved a lot over the years, I'm using a moto, a oneplus since a decade, they're still running. Recently got a Xiaomi (poco) and maybe my next phone will also be a chinese brand

In fact, HMD and Huawei both equally made bad phones.

But huawei is worse, because it still uses 10nm chip on its latest flagship.

Right now, in February 2024, HMD have teased a phone which they will announce in July 2024 and it will be available for sale later by September / October 2024. After the launch of Android 15, they will launch their phone with Android 14 pre-installed and it will get only 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of security updates. Typical HMD.
