Domestoboto, 01 Mar 2024Except there are practical reasons for going all-in on UFS ... moreSamsung has announced new micro SD express cards with 800 MB/s speeds, which is comfortably lightyears beyond all the usual data rates of 4k60 or 8k30 video found on smartphones. Now, there are no obvious reasons not to implenent an internal reader that could handle these speeds.
Android is of course sabotaging the optimum use of physical/external memory, as google wannts to sell you their cloud space and use take all your data. Same thing goes for Apple software.
Anyways: There are many people out there what have collections of own video recordings and raw photo files or huge music libraries that they just want to have available at their fingertips.

justasmile, 01 Mar 2024Not the main reason why they would do that.
Plus SD cards,... moreSD cards usually out last phones.
The UFS is usually soldered onto the motherboard, it's doesn't matter if the UFS can last forever, the PSU, RAM, SOC and other stuffs on the MB can all spoil far easier than the SD card, rendering all data on the ever lasting UFS inaccessible.
Plus the OS can sometime brick and required a system reset despite nothing wrong with the hardware.

justasmile, 01 Mar 20241TB MicroSD card, 30% the speed, $100.
1TB cloud storage, ... moreWhich cloud services give you 1TB Free Storage?
For convenience:
Cloud : Needs to be connected to Internet.
SD: No such needs.
For Speed:
Cloud : Need to be send via internet to a server miles away.
SD : In your phone connected to your MB via the reader.
Cloud storage having 90% speed vs SD 30%, is , pure nonsense. I tried uploading and downloading the same files using Apple Cloud, G Drive and One Drive, all 3 of them are far slower with Apple Cloud being slowest and I am using 5Ghz Wifi with 1Gbps. They takes at least 5x longer to download and 10x longer to upload.
Who's the one with a delusional mind? You don't even know basic science.

Domestoboto, 01 Mar 2024Except there are practical reasons for going all-in on UFS ... more100% Wrong.
1: Just because you can't install apps on SD doesn't make them useless. Having Media on SD makes sense. You have no right to judge if's others are hoarding or not.
2: SD card is fast enough for most media purpose. Not being fast enough to save above 4K 30fps is lame because 4K takes up too much space anyway.
3: Cloud is far slower compared to SD and that doesn't stop people from using them.

1TB MicroSD card, 30% the speed, $100.
1TB cloud storage, 90% the speed, $0 (yes that's a thing).
Of course, such users would choose the former, because of their delusional minds.

Ottonis, 29 Feb 2024Phones that still offer a micro-SD-card slot do it as a com... moreExcept there are practical reasons for going all-in on UFS storage (cloud storage is a whole other can of worms, though I will say government legislation is necessary to stop the "use your cloud data for AI training" fearmongering):
1. MicroSD cards are BEYOND USELESS on Android. Unlike Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and all other handhelds, you cannot run any program, much less a game, off the microSD card, and you cannot offload any app to the microSD card. It's only good for hoarding (illegally) torrented/DL'd files and spicy content; media apps like Apple Music and Spotify run poorly with the microSD card, to the point that after every restart, media "saved" to the card are forcibly removed and "re-saved" to the internal storage.
2. Card readers are just too slow compared to UFS 3.0 and UFS 4.0 storage (30MB/s sustained R/W speeds compared to over 3000MB/s sustained R/W), it can't handle 8K or anything more than 4K30; that's why Sony restricts anything past 4K30 to the internal storage.
