Anonymous, 25 Mar 2024Idk. I would like to believe but they say arm for years and... moreIf it can improve battery life, it's important!
But of course processors shouldn't be created by Samsung 😅
So, I want to see a good CPU for laptops with good battery life and good work with Linux! (We already can see ISO's for arm, but can't see good arm CPUs).

Checked again at Dev meeting today. I hardly think usable as a dev machine. Well for python student guys maybe but nothing for serious

24 GB max on air is clearly no buy. Compile, docker compose, vm, ide and it'll swamp like hell.

Then mac book pro 32 or more, but prices become crazy, and loose the portability slim of mac, so other competitors like gaming machines come in.

Talking with dev who where bragging with their mb pro today at dev meeting. They said all work seamlessly , using emilation for x86 binaries when needed, everything was being ported. And
In fact, when looking more thoroughly, for their work they had to use pc for this and this as their main coding machine...

Don't get me wrong. I still believe battery usage is awesome. For video, music it's awesome ( I always stare when I see how easily mac work with audio hardware, and always wanted logic pro ...)

But as a pure dev and nice os , no. I smell something bad in macos, mile very old style programming with just optimizing in goal, tweaked old mach 3 kernel and all. Good for some usage, very bad for others

Just, if Apple processors were that efficient, datacenters would have bought tons of mac mini to run Unix or even Linux and saved trillions of electricity bills and pretend to save the planet with less CO2 at same time... They don't care the brand was it apple Samsung or zylog, they just care their electricity bills and running Linux or some tweakable Unix.
    Am I wrong ? :)

Datacenter tried arm, they went back Intel and AMD..

For Raw power, it's still x86.

It's more than only TSMC can do great now. Look, Samsung is bad, despite arm. And AMD is great when on TSMC.

Those explanation about Cisc/ RISC and multiple binaries ( w/wo GPU, vectors..
) well it's part of it but with microcode and superscalar and also arm becoming more 'complex' ) multi core, multi intructuon set, many more instructions, soc capabilities...)
does it still mean anything important nowadays ?

It's a modest improvements over the M2, thus Apple keeps using the M1 for comparison in their marketing to show a larger improvements.

With many of Apple engineers out and in Nuvia, it makes sense that Apple Silicon is stagnating. This is why I'm more excited for Qualcomm's Oryon cores.

Iterative update like these are obsolete and will never allow the user to do such a thing, like playing it on Mac OS.

Also the Os is very tied to the HW - I'd say too much tied imo -, so for example any video will run only on the video Dec low power tile. That's also how they get great battery life.

Anyway, apple is still apple, and I can't get on it, I don't like their os, their walled garden, and I have never liked the brand. But I'm lurking more and more in those macair things, because Intel is sleeping...

Anonymous, 05 Mar 2024They can do that way only.. Macs are better for what it is,... moreNo, their 8 GB RAM is still 8 GB RAM. Whoever came up with the bullshit that it is somehow "better" has no clue how the world works. The only difference between MacOS and Windows is that MacOS swaps very early, while Windows keeps the RAM in use until it is neccessary to swap. That's why it looks like MacOS uses less RAM; they simply handle it differently. Under load, there is no difference between either OS, both will swap to free up enough RAM.
