Darth Caesium, 09 Mar 2024Ok, so you don't care about the cameras, which is fine... moreIf you read where I said I would prefer the phone to be a bit cheaper, then you'd know I don't want this phone to be a premium phone lol. And these are all just rumours right now. I don't think 1080p is an issue. Not something you can tell until you see it in person. But considering the ROG phone 8 had a 1080p panel and people weren't crying about it, I think it should be fine lol

Well since it's the 11th version you just gotta make it for $1100 dollars...

Also I promise you if you ask 99% of people how many software updates their phone gets they wouldn't be able to answer

Oh Asus. The Taiwanese just doesn’t seem to grasp the business. Asus had a great unique positioning as gaming phone with their ROG line, and they made a splash with the Zenfone 9 and 10 as a great compact phone. They had good unique positioning for both products in the market of generic big slab phones. All they need to do is improving their software support so consumers can see the value against competitors like Samsung.

But nope. Not only they made the latest ROG into a more generic phone, they made the Zenfone into just another big slab phone. Worse, they’re pricing them to compete with brands like Samsung that provides better software support. So basically they’re killing their own last two unique positioning.

Seeing Asus release this at this price has me convinced we won't be seeing Asus making phones for much longer.

The display is still an issue, though, since it's 1080p while also being 6.8". This means that it only has 388PPI, which means that you can spot the individual pixels on it quite easily, since PenTile AMOLED screens (and every one of them nowadays is PenTile) viewed from the kind of distance phones get viewed at require a sharpness of 460PPI in order to be perfectly sharp. You're going to notice the gap between each pixel. This is not only not premium at all, it's actually even worse than other 1080p phone screens since those are smaller, and the only flagships that have 1080p screens are either small ones like the Asus Zenfone 9 and 10 or the Samsung Galaxy S24 (who have around 420-440PPI), or they are cheaper flagship killer-type deals like the Tecno X2 Pro. You don't necessarily need 1440p, but 1080p is way too low for a screen this size. This really isn't premium.

For same money S24 gives 7 years, S23 and S23+ (they hover around this price now) wil end at Android 17.

Pixel 8 also is going to get 7 years (8 Pro is a bit more expensove here)

And even iPhone 15 is cheaper and will get at least 5 (because with Apple it can go beyond that but they never announce it upfront)

And both OnePlus 12 and Xiaomi 14 are around same price here and to better too

And that is just the update situation, camera wise all the phones (especially Pixel and iPhone) I mentioned are better too.

I don't want to bash on Asus, but the price they pick for this is in a territory where whe have better options.

Quitting the compact phone market may not be a good move but it won't make a difference.

Its either sheepphone or about 3 other models at most:
                                    Motorola-no-updates-after-1year
                                    Oneplus 12 (horrible cam design).
Googlephone that spies on you on chip level.

and this is about it. This is real reason sheeplephones are so dominant in US.

But also - yeah I would get this Asus phone just because I like camera layout over one plus and I dont want google spyware or no updates option from moto and there are no other options.

Ouifuf, 09 Mar 2024I hope it's a bit cheaper than this. One of the good p... moreGreat value ain't to be had with this phone unless it's around half the price at €500-€600. This is such a pathetically-designed phone that chances are it would cost them too much to sell it at that price I mentioned (maybe that might even mean selling at a loss) and yet would be wholly uncompetitive at any other price point above it. If that telephoto had a periscope design, used a 50MP sensor that was larger and had macro; if the main sensor was better and larger than the IMX890 typically used on mid-rangers; if the ultrawide used a larger 50MP sensor and could do macro; if the selfie was either 12MP or 50MP and had proper autofocus; and if the the resolution of the display at least equated to 460PPI; this might've worked, though only in Western markets. Even what I'm describing here is wholly uncompetitive elsewhere, and does nothing to differentiate itself from Chinese phones except for the Gimbal stabilisation, which itself was a Vivo-led tech that they dropped due to its compromises over OIS, and so when Asus picked it up, they picked up a tech that was not really that worth it anyway and yet adds unnecessary expenses both in R&D and in design and production costs.

More than 1000 EUR? Good luck! hahaha
