    I have been loyal to Sony since day one back in the days of the Sony Ericsson p900 early 2000's for over 20 years. Yes people Sony has been around a long time before apple and the p900 is the real smartphone of the past. I have seen all the improvements I have watched everything happen on every device. I now have the Sony Xperia 1 II and am waiting for this next phone for my new upgrade. The 4k screen and DPI of the current screen is far better than anything on the market. My eyes definitely tell the difference. 21.9 aspect ratio is perfect for the top movies and YouTube content, yes you need to change some settings and sometimes need to move the screen wider but the content is amazing. The brightness does need to go higher. If Sony changes the phone I can't see this getting new customers. The issue is Sony refuse to advertise and push for new markets. If Sony goes away from 4k I believe this is a very big step back and possibly could lose its only customers. I myself am upset and still don't believe Sony is that stupid to go back in technology Sony has never done that in the past Sony has never been a follower they are the leaders. If they become sheep 🐑 I may start to look elsewhere.

      it's a step back. I thought they kept the proportions so that the screen could be rolled out (like in LG Rollable). I thought that was what their vision was going for. I praised Sony for 4k on the phone (more and more 4k materials appear) because there was no need to scale the image of the 4k recording. If what the author wrote is true, why did they have different proportions (no vision of a roll-up phone) than other manufacturers?

        I won't be buying another sony, and their sales will be even worse.
        Why buy the worse phone with the same design as other phones with more support?

          There is no reason to do this! I wanted to upgrade to the Sony Xperia 1 VI (what a good name with that number six!) rom my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, but if this is true I see no reason to purchase the newer model.

          Why couldn't Sony put off this stupid change until Sony Xperia 1 VII?

            I usually change my Sony Xperia every year but this year I was going to change my mark iv to the next mark vi, my reason is that there was very little difference between the iv and the v. But if Sony drops the 4k screen and change the aspect ratio I will buy the mark v and have it as my last Sony phone. I have used Sony products for over 40 years because the quality was always great and still is. I'm not going to argue about who is the best etc because it could go on forever! It will just be a shame for Sony because they were always different from the crowd.

The Asus Zenphones compact ones got it right in my opinion with their compact design. Sony tall aspect ratio put me off! Sony should release next phone with the same design as the xz1 series. I liked the square boxy design. Obviously with less bezels.

                I guessed they will use:

                Xperia 1: 8gen 3
                Xperia 5: 8s gen 3
                Xperia 10 : 7s gen 2

                  Punch holes and notches are for normal people. People suffering from OCD like me feels discomfort, curse apple for introducing such concept, other brands idiotly followed, such a shame.

                  What's left of the greatness of rog faded the moment they adopted the punch hole. I just wish sony xperias would make the top and bottom front speakers equal in length just like with rog phone 3 for example, not like with current xperias where the top front speaker is shorter than the bottom front speaker.

The sales of the Xperia 1 phones are horrible because when they are released, you can buy Galaxy S Ultra phones for much cheaper. The Xperia 5 phones are also very expensive compared to other comparable phones when they are released.

It a... moreIn all honesty, I prefer having a clean screen with no holes or notches just as the old school smartphones used to be when 18:6 was the norm. That's the only thing I like about Sony phones, the fact that they put the selfie one in a small top bezel among other stuff. Downside is that it makes your phone even taller unless you would skip on any form of bottom bezel but then you have an asymmetric design (which failed to attract with one of the previous pixel phones). I would not mind this. In fact when the first bezel-les smartphones came out they had 3 sides with minimal or seemingly no bezels while the bottom bezel housed everything like the selfie camera en sometimes also a home and other haptic buttons. I loved it.

Look at how big the cameras are... moreI don't get your obsession with the gallery app. Google Photos does great, and having a second OEM gallery just adds needless bloatware. Also Sony's 1 and 5 phones are not designed for the same market as the iPhone 15, Galaxy S24 or Pixel 8. They are designed for a niche that really isn't big enough for Sony to bother with if I'm being honest, so I do agree on improving the auto mode as it does need work.

It allows for thin bezels, good selfie camera quality, durability, and only a small interruption. Really the only better option is the pop up camera. Sony's bezels are comical in 2024, especially the side bezels which are needlessly thick and getting thicker.

                                    Smallworld, 27 Mar 2024To watch movies without black borders I know that but, in my mind, it isn't the main purpose of a smartphone. Consuming media is only one of the possibilities and if it's completely focused on that then it diminishes the user friendliness of the many other functionalities. With such a screen ratio you limit yourself to a specific group of users which isn't great in terms of sales potential. I think that is also the reason why Sony would go for a more normal screen ratio.

                                      Tbh I'm willing to see the classic 16:9 ratio from Sony. It's rare now these days, and most youtube videos are set at 16:9 anyways.
