MarkusLeto, 19 Apr 2024What is the function of the retractable camera? It creates more distance between the lens and the 1-inch sensor to capture a fuller and more detailed image.

Wow, this phone is truly high end, especially the price. When you convert it to what the international price would be (the CNY/USD nominal conversion does not hold for Chinese phones), it would be $2500, which beats every foldable on the market. It's closer to the Vision Pro price than the price of most flagships. Even if you just compare Chinese prices, this is more expensive than most foldables.

SKYNET, 18 Apr 2024Officially the crappiest phone of this year beating out Xia... more"old 989 molded with 1.6 aperture instead of using lyt 900 that comes with 1.6 aperture by default (and has much wider dynamic range and better battery life)"
Please tell me you know nothing about how those modules are assembled without telling me you don't how they are assembled.. They don't come with "molded" lens "by default", the lens is usually custom-designed by each smartphone manufacturer. Some camera modules are sold as a sensor + lens package (e.g. 90mm equivalent F3.5 64MP telephoto module commonly seen on many smartphones), but 22.5mm equivalent F1.6 lens on Huawei cannot be found anywhere else so most likely they let their in-house imaging engineer team design the lens and tell the lens manufacturer to produce and assemble elements according to their blueprints.
"yellow thanks to special ryyb matrix"
RYYB CFA doesn't magically turn photos yellow, that literally doesn't make any sense - Huawei has resolved the colour cast and white balance instability issues with RYYB a long time ago.

Supus, 18 Apr 2024Good luck with these prices. 🤪🤡💩🖕Huawei doesn't really need luck lol. Their phones sell like a hotcake in China, where the majority of their smartphone sales come from anyway.

It's good that they have a retractable camera module for a phone while keeping the IP rating, but I wish they used it to fit in a larger sensor, e.g. Micro Four Thirds. Right now all it does is reducing the thickness of the camera bump by 1-2 millimeters, which is still quite a bit but I'm not entirely sure if it's something that *requires* such a complex mechanism as a solution.

Jagganatha, 18 Apr 2024Two things occur to me. WHY? Why not just make phones fatte... moreIt's not so much about thickness, it's about weight. Try to hold your phone for longer period of time... Now imagine thicker and heavier device.... PS: I'm the person who used to have Nokia 808 and galaxy K zoom... But at this screen sizes, cameras are good enough if that means not having even bigger and heavier device... And people want this size. Every compact phone wanished instantly. Even iPhone mini.....

Anonymous, 18 Apr 2024Ask oppo, it is exactly like their demo from 2021. Huawei... moreUm.. motorised retractable cameras actually existed way before Oppo announced their concept for their phone, after all it's something that has been commonly seen on compact digital cameras for over a decade. Huawei's implementation is quite different anyway - Unlike Oppo's showcase, it's for the main camera, not for the telephoto camera.
