Weekly poll: will you buy a Sony Xperia 1 VI or Xperia 10 VI?

19 May 2024
The 1 VI may look mostly the same, but it mixes up the Xperia formula quite significantly. The 10 VI brings upgrades of its own and a lower price to boot.

[deleted post]Tech blogs comments can be infantile and nasty. I guess it's the state of the world these days.

Bought and used an xperia 1 iv. Loved it but some few key issues I had made me move. The 1 VI fixed like 99% of them. If it had faster charging and better thermals (idm if they make it a bit thicker) I would 1000% buy one

Boldpixel, 19 May 2024$600 is the most I can spend on aphone so the 1 VI is out. ... moreExpandable memory and a headphone jack are nice features, though. Sony phones are actually good. They're built well, user friendly and have nice designs. The two major problems with their phones are the ridiculous prices and lack of availability.

$600 is the most I can spend on aphone so the 1 VI is out. I can buy the 10 VI if it was much cheaper but as it is, the A55 is better. Only thing the xperia phone has is 3 os updates and 4 years security updates. ( Sony does not miss any update and does not update lazily like other OEMs that claim 4 years but do quarterly or semi annual
        security updates).

Manufacturing these things is environmentally destructive. I hope that the Fair phone improves and that it becomes available in most countries.

I would if I could. Sony doesn't launch their phones in India.

David 040882, 19 May 2024"No, there are better mid-rangers out there" is t... moreExactly! This phone excels at absolutely nothing in its price class. It's an objectively terrible phone to buy. Seriously, buy the Nothing Phone 2a, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ or the Vivo V30, they outdo this piece of garbage in every way possible.

I have still yet to come across a phone I like as much as the LG V20. Expandable memory, headphone jack, user replaceable battery, user friendly interface, not too large for the average pocket, not too small, nice aspect ratio, the notification quick menu second screen is useful, the camera wasn't bad for a phone camera. The specs aren't what today's phones have but it worked fine for years. I bought extra batteries and just switched them when they ran down. I bought an off market battery a couple of years ago. It still works but isn't reliable as a phone and, this puts me in an increasingly small minority, I carry a phone to be able to receive and make phone calls. The 1VI seems close to it, but without the user replaceable battery. It costs about five times more but it seems close. I very likely would have bought it if it were available here.

Waiting for pre order to get one. It gets closer and closer each year to the "tool" that they wanted to create since the OG 1

Anton .el PAPI., 19 May 2024Not even the few Sony fans are happy with this degradation ... moreThe only phone I've used with a higher resolution than what the VI now uses is an LG G8. I can notice a difference but I kept it at 1080 most of the time to conserve the battery. I prefer the wider screen on the new model. The problem isn't the lower resolution, it's that the savings weren't passed on to the consumer. It's just a higher profits. I would have waited for reviews about the supposedly improved audio quality, waited for the price to go down and then very likely wouldn't have bought the 1vi if it were available in the U.S.

While I like the 1 Mk6's new 7.1x variable zoom telephoto camera and its excellent battery rating, I don't think I'll miss out on staying with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 from last year's 1 Mk5. Also, there will be the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with in-house Oryon CPUs, which makes little sense to get the Mk6. I'd get a secondhand 1 Mk5 and wait for next year's 1 Mk7.

As for the 10 Mk6, I'm not impressed with its battery rating. Despite the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1's SoC performance, the battery rating difference between it and the Snapdragon 695 is rather worrying.

The Sony Xperia 10 VI has too many problems. The selfie and ultrawide should be 12MP, and the main sensor is still too small to be competitive. Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is also wholly uncompetitive in both performance and efficiency, and, say with me:

IT! STILL! HAS! A! 60Hz! REFRESH! RATE! IN! 2024!

Moving on from that, the Sony Xperia 1 VI still has lots of problems. The screen should've been kept at 21:9, and the resolution should've either been 3360×1440 or some other resolution that gives exactly 460ppi on a 6.5" display. The ultrawide, selfie and telephoto all need 48MP sensors (or 50MP sensor cropped slightly in to act like a 48MP sensor) that also all need to be bigger, and the fact that the new telemacro mode only works at 120mm or above is such an abysmal failure in software that I have no words. The telephoto still produces extremely soft photos, worsened by the fact that it has a new 7.1× zoom that produces even softer photos. Like, I would've thought that they'd finally use a bigger effective sensor rather than this awful sensor crop and upscale that they're doing on a rather huge sensor, because the quality of the photos is downright embarassingly bad at such a zoom length. Plus, they still use incredibly destructive processing on the main camera in a completely unsuccessful attempt to remove vignetting and noise, with no way to turn it off even in RAW mode! The battery life, headphone jack and microSD card slot are the only great things about this phone at this price class. A variable telephoto would be useful, but the completely illogical use of its otherwise very capable if somewhat old sensor makes it nearly completely useless during the day and just completely useless at night.

as much i'd like one of them, both are somewhat overpriced for the specs, the 10 would've been perfect an 7gen 2 soc, instead of that wretched 6gen 1...

Well, considering that it won't be available in the U S , I can't. I was planning on getting the 1 VI. I assumed that the cheaper screen would lead to a cheaper price but it didn't so I would still have likely waited to see if the price went down. It has features and a design I like but it isn't going to be available here.
