Qualcomm quietly unveils the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chipset

08 June 2024
It appears to be similar to the Snapdragon 695 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and not a successor to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1.

It's just enough to see the title "Qualcomm QUIETLY unveils" to say: disappointing qualcomm, disappointing.

Deliberate suspicious naming to confuse consumers. Just great Intel and AMD has also adapted to these shitty practices.

This is ewaste! Thanks Qualcomm! Do better forecasting instead of producing this junk.

"Is Qualcomm trying to be Xiaomi with their naming? Where is the 6 Gen 2, or the 6 Gen 3, or that would've made sense? Plus it's worse than the 6 Gen 1, like that makes any sense.

Still using only UFS 2.2, but at least it's TSMC, not Samsung."

To repeat an earlier quote you cannot cut and paste any part of an article and accurately iclude any text you input.

Where is the 6 Gen 2, or the 6 Gen 3, or that would've made sense?
Actually NOT as this nonsense shows

You could teach this to "Year 3 Pupil".
The upgrade "gen" has to be released BEFORE the version 'Snapdragon #' changes

        Year 4 and above!

Snapdragon 6 gen 1(4nm) 09/22 was released AFTER Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 05/22. A retro/ slotting in / marketing release SoC... thus Gen 2 / Gen 3 cannot now exist
The name changes are now locked in. another distinction is 6s Gen 3 is 6nm

        "Plus it's worse"
        Third person?

The "gen" WHEN released AFTER is ALWAYS BETTER think I Just Read asleep in comparison to you

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is superior to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 which is superior to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

If barring naming conventions above Qualcomm were going to release Snapdragon 6 Gen 2 / Gen 3 do you think it would be worse.

The Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 dual-cluster ARCHITECTURE two Cortex-A78 cores 2.3 GHz & six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz.

Well where have we seen this before?
        Year 4?

what gen 3 ?! they should rename like sd 860

            Why not make a "remake"/Rebranding snapdragon 845, 855 or 860.

In 2020, the 6 series chip (695) had around 60-65% of CPU performance and 25% GPU performance of a 8 series chip (888).

Now, 7 Gen 3 has around 45-50% CPU performance and 30% GPU performance of 8 Gen 3. Since the performance gaps are similar (or even a bit larger overall), I'm contending that it should have been in 6 series.

I wish they'd just use older flagship processors as midrange ones like Apple does with their cheapo pads.
I can't imagine they're saving much money after the R&D costs and lost economies of scale of developing entirely new, worse chips

7 Gen 3 is a pretty good chip for mid-range, but it should ideally have been called 6 Gen 3.

7+ Gen 3/8s Gen 3 should have been one chip called 7 Gen 3 (maybe a plus moniker, if they really wanted to push two chips, where plus would have signified higher clocks/features - much simpler and easier to understand).

Only 7+ gen 2/3 are exceptions but these dont end in masses as in lots of brands. 7+ gen 2 was only in 2 Xiaomi phones as Redmi note 12 Turbo and Poco F5 and 1 model in the Realme brand. Now the 7+ gen 3 is maybe one more then just Redmi and Realme phones. The rest of the 7 series is basically in the bottom of the performance of 7 series around 600k to 800k in antutu v10

We should be already at the 600k range with the bottom budget phones performance as the top end 8 gen 3 is like 2 million points and the 8 gen 4 be even more

4 and 6 is still in 400k range while that 300k-400k range was already like 5 years ago budget range with these Helio G8x 9x

I'm not entirely sure why Qualcomm bothers with these chips anymore. Like the Snapdragon 695 is so popular that there is no reason to rebrand the chip to give it more relevancy. It's confusing. This should be called the Snapdragon 4+ Gen 2 and not the 6s Gen 3. In fact, this chip shouldn't have been launched at all. All it does is cause a ton of confusion for the average buyer. At least the 4G version was made to compete with the popular MediaTek Helio G99 chip, and that the Snapdragon 685 was still being used, being Qualcomm's last 4G only SoC, signifying manufacturers still make 4G-only phones 5 YEARS after 5G debuted. But there was no reason to make the 5G version, and at a glance, you can't tell if you're looking at a 4G or 5G phone because both will just say that they're powered by the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3. Unless they actually bothered to stick 5G onto the end of the name of the phone, which is becoming less common since 5G is just an assumed feature. Unless there is a 4G version of the phone with the same name, they probably won't bother slapping 5G onto the end. Plus the specs. The Adreno 619 is four years old, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 has a 4nm fabrication (so why is this 6nm?), and 1080p max video recording.

I need to stop my rant here.

pl2rts, 08 Jun 2024Well 4 Gen 1 is pretty much same like SD695 as the 4 gen 2 ... moreAgreed. Each succeeding generation (in the same number series) should be a distinct improvement over the previous generation (like we see in the 8 series). Here, in the 4 and 6 series we are seeing opposite trend. As a result, the gap between 8 series and 4/6 series has increased dramatically.

It looks like the marketing guys told them that 4 series gives off the perception of "mediocre", so they are trying to brand even their budget chip as a '6 series' offering. 4 series will now have truly entry-level chips, and I won't be shocked at this stage if they start launching processors based on A76 cores.
