All currently supported iPhones will get iOS 18, but most will miss on AI

11 June 2024
That means that if your phone is running iOS 17, you can update it to iOS 18. You might not get all the features, though.

justasmile, 11 Jun 2024Well they said it was fully on-device...A chip like A17 Pro isn't really capable of full on-device AI. It's not your fault for being tricked (not being sarcastic) by Apple's manipulative marketing. They KNOW how to market.

Using so much of neural engine power just to improve 5-10% of tasks you do is a gimmick in itself

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2024A16 was basically a15 with slightly better memory speed. A1... moreWho cares what the technical explanation is, they are currently selling a model that will not get on-device AI - how nonsensical is that, even for Apple?

We won't even mention the slap for those who bought the expensive 14 Pro, either.

Like mostly anything related to computers there will be later versions with more refined capabilities and features at the cost of higher requirements. What I mean is that the upcoming AI uses on the A17 Pro will be nowhere as useful as what we're to see in the future, say A20 Pro and so on. To be fair ChatGPT is getting better with every iteration but it still feels like it's being pushed because of hype rather than usefulness.

justasmile, 11 Jun 2024Nah, especially since this is on-device, basically no spyware. Some is Apple's server-side, Some is on-device. If it was fully on-device, it would need more TOPS since A17 Pro can only output ~37 TOPS vs Qualcomm's X Elite 45 TOPS

I won't longing or miss any of the AI shit on iOS 18 and I'm glad my iPhone 11 are not on the AI list 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm not that lazy to do a simple easy thing like taking notes, checking grammar and so on. The only thing that I think AI is useful to me is doing language translation. I can get more accurate translation. Other than that? Don't be lazy ass. Go learn how to make things instead of asking AI to do it for you 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2024So, now is this clear to me. iPhone give you new iOS number... moreExactly. If you are lucky the updates are harmless but also not nearly as feature-rich as expected, if you are unluck, your phone will become slow and unresponsive, to the point that a new phone is needed, since rolling back to an older version of iOS is not possible to my knowledge..

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2024So, now is this clear to me. iPhone give you new iOS number... moreLol.. this is well known fact.. Apple being doing this since forever .

That why people keeps lining up to get the greatest and newest and shiniest iphone every year.

But personally i dont really care about the missing features as long as the updates are bugs free and still keep the performance on acceptable level.

I'm not so concerned by missing out on their list of gimmicky AI functions that I have no use for, but it's still horribly stiff of them to limit on-device AI functions to devices with the A17 Pro and M processors - they're excluding even the iPhone 15 (A16) they are currently selling?

Mills, 11 Jun 2024Am glad that my iPhone(s) will not get AI, I dislike them alreadyNah, especially since this is on-device, basically no spyware.

Not having this AI on my phone is actually a feature I'd pay for. (I wish I could also turn off Google Assistant/Bixby/Gemini/Alexa/Cortana from all my devices with a single toggle)

It reminds me of the Automatic vs Manual transmission debate between car enthusiasts, having AI type for you, generate photos for you, summarize & search for you, etc... will only make you dumber.

It's like expecting a kid to learn arithmetic at school when he has a calculator that does everything for him. 🤣

So, now is this clear to me. iPhone give you new iOS number, so it can be better comparing with Android in terms of updates to newest version. But if you have older phone, all you get is iOS number without features. Good trick!
