Qualcomm has got arrogant and seems to believe that, as the most dominant smartphone chip provider in the android space, they can charge however much they want and manufacturers will still buy them. This is bad for us consumers too, as it results in higher prices for the end devices. Thankfully, it appears that Mediatek is in a position to keep Qualcomm in check.

DeepIn2U, 14 Jun 2024Why exactly? In product performance and tehnical terms ... moreIt helps maintain healthy competition between qualcomm and Mediatek. Currently, it's practically a snapdragon monopoly as Samsung, the most prominent android manufacturer, uses exclusively snapdragon (along with their own exynos chips) in their flagship phones and tablets. But by switching to Mediatek, it helps shake up the market a bit, and would give increase mediatek's market share simply because of how popular Samsung's tablets are. Additionally, it's not an inferior product either. In terms of performance, it is on about the same level as the snapdragon chips, and is close in terms of efficiency as well.

Shamdung69, 14 Jun 2024What are you talking about? This is a great thing. Frankly,... moreWhy exactly?

In product performance and tehnical terms please explain with proof WHY they should?!

Furthermore changing SoC companies heavily affects current and future deals and sorry MediaTek isn't going to have a steady increase of innovation like Qualcomm has PROVEN to have over a 2 decades continually and steadily - internally and via acquisitions.

Just because apple used it's laptop chip in its iPad doesn't mean others should do something similar. Tablets don't need laptop level power. Flagship phone chips from qualcomm and (in this case) Mediatek are more than powerful enough.

potato4k, 14 Jun 2024Not really. Samsung tabs are not selling that much. That... moreIncorrect. Samsung tablets sell very well. The market share of Samsung tablets is about 25%.

would it affect the price of the tablet? like being cheaper than regular tab s10 with snapdragon chipset?

Ha, 13 Jun 2024It will be advertised as 'octa core 3ghz chipset'... moreNot really. Samsung tabs are not selling that much. That's why even their flagship tablet has worse OS update policy conoared to their Galaxy S phones. Not that many people use them.

Healthyheart, 13 Jun 2024Oh dear. Meditek heats. Faced and facing heating issue. My ... moreYour problem is not mediatek, it's that crap MiUI.

The Qualcomm price premium is real then, for Samsung to even go to Mediatek. So the Tabs Will be mediatek, and the Galaxy S will be Exynos. Only the foldables would use Qualcomm, with a price increase. And I doubt that would last long, considering the rumor of cheaper foldables with Exynos.

This is what worries me about SD8gen4. It might be an excellent SoC, but it won't be widely available as OEMs are opting for cheaper alternatives. I'm predicting that Qualcomm would slowly pivot to PC SoCs with their X series, leaving flagship mobile to mediatek and Exynos, simply because the flagship Snapdragon would be too costly for OEMs to even consider.
