Unless the HMS apis are identical and you just have to change package names. But that doesn't even solve the issue of NDK natives. I think this basically spells the end for westerners using Huawei devices sadly. (Mate XS 2 user here)

It already works well, but if it goes globally to other phones, how do they think they will solve applications that will not be compatible with Android, Instagram, Viber Telegram, WhatsApp, that is the most used globally

Maybe now apple fanboys will stop addressing to non-iphones as "androids"

The comments on GSM Arena are predictable, always eye poking and scratching like jealous girlfriends and immature adolescents. Here constructive differences are absent it's like a hawk waiting for foul to leave nest and eat the foul whereas a smart hawk goes for the eggs so that there might be eggs to eat another season.

It's a difficult challenge but I hope they succeed.

If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it.

There are A LOT of nuances here, and they seem to be foreign to you. And I don't have the time nor crayons to educate you. I mean I can explain it for you, but I cannot understand it for you.

If you think China is your friend, you are nuclearly mistaken. If you think Huawei is your friend, you are spyingly mistaken. And the same applies to Apple and USA government. There are no "good corporations" or "good governments", just different systems with differences. And they are the minority, globally the elite number in the ten millions. You do have a friend, me and others like me, who we are the same: consumers who don't hold any political/financial power. We want the best for you because it is the best for the most amount of people. To go against me, or to side with the corporations, you are basically going against humans, over 7 billions of us.

You do realise they're being heavily sanctioned by the most belligerent government on Earth? The fact that they are still operating and making extremely competitive products is a miracle in itself.

"Have a look at Jingling A1 Tablet, which was made by a small team in China. They're awesome. And managed to make a decent iOS/AndroidOS competitor based on an open source Linux Distro build. That should have been Huawei."

How exactly is a linux tablet "awesome"? Judging by the availability and sales of linux tablets, clearly many people don't think it is.

"If you had not noticed, the USA government is not really concerned by Redmi, Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, Meizu, TCL, Nothing, etc etc. Those are phone brands or consumer electronics. What they are concerned about is ZTE and Huawei, who are telecommunications corporations."

First off, you actually think it's okay for the US to ban Huawei or ZTE telecommunications products? Why should they be banned? Secondly, the US tried to ban Xiaomi and are banning TikTok, neither of which are telecommunications companies. There are also plenty of Chinese tech companies on the US entity list that are not telecommunications companies.

"Huawei is basically dead as a phone company outside of China."

They're still releasing phones outside of China and are selling well in some regions.

"But they could have used this situation to advance technology"

How is making a new mobile OS not advancing technology? You think using Linux is advancing technology? Linux is over 20 years old.

"instead of becoming even more closer aligned with the government (and military). I guess you can't change the spots on a cheetah, just ask Nortel."

Repeating US propaganda with no proof whatsoever. No horse in the race, right.

I read a lot of comments here and they think that this is a war between the US and Huawei. I said clearly that was wrong. This is a war between the US and the rest of the world. The US dollar strengthened drastically against foreign exchange in a year when the Android OS became popular. This strengthening is due to the US getting a lot of money from technology services including social media and marketplaces. Many countries experience trade injustices over this. And guess who popularized the Android OS and Google play services? Who popularizes Meta services? The answer is Chinese mobile phone manufacturers. The Chinese who made the US what it is now, they made the US too rich. And they have to take responsibility for that. So if in Harmony OS there are no Google and Meta services. Then they are on the right track.

In fact, due to its origins as an IoT system, the first versions weren't even available for phones. They were only available on low memory devices (watches, TVs, routers etc) and and with not a bit of Android code.

It was the later introduction of HarmonyOS for phones and tablets that brought with it a hybrid kernel including AOSP and native Huawei code. A fair amount of AOSP code is submitted by Huawei under open source projects. In fact Android itself is actually including a Huawei developed file system now for some situations.

So those larger memory devices used a different kernel to the ones in other devices.

HarmonyOS NEXT is the next step and there is no reason to think most, if not all, Android code has been removed. I'm sure people are already digging through the code to verify this.

For a while the security elements of the HarmonyOS kernel were being used (without branding) on some Huawei wearables running LiteOS.
