If Android wasn't opensource, they would have lost access to it a long time ago. They ended up losing access to GMS and Android updates from Google and they were not able to release a phone with the latest Android version. Having their own OS is the best thing for them and developers can port their Android apps over to the new OS with the development tools supplied by Huawei.

This will kill Huawei on a global level. HarmonyOS was already a very mixed bag, not to mention the frankly ridiculous pricing of their phones. With this, they will not be able to compete anymore.

i remember when still using p40 pro and had to fiddle with hacks to make notifications to work because they work with google push notifications most of them, I couldn't get any dev from those app to use huawei push notifications
so good luck getting devs making their own harmony OS version of the app

If they can do it well, I would love for Android to have a competition.

Let's do this! I've already pissed with the controlled Android apk+.

Honor is just a consumer electronic brand. Meanwhile, Huawei "sold" Honor to a conglomerate, where the main shareholders is a state owned company. 😅 And you can simply look at MagicOS, which is basically eMUI.

Only a blind person would believe Huawei's claim that this is "made from the ground up".

Next step for Huawei is probably luring app developers outside China to join in the fun. How they do it? It's a big question.

Kangal, 23 Jun 2024It's kind of funny that they say "NextOS" is... moreUS sanctions were meant to cripple their competition so US brands can keep offering mediocre products and overcharging their customers. We've seen how Apple are offering better cameras and slashing prices off their phones. That is not happening thanks to the resilience of companies like Huawei.

jiyen235, 23 Jun 2024bro, this is not just about the US or the west, it's a... moreForeign companies operating in China will make apps for Harmony OS Next which in turn can be used outside of China. It's the same situation that Huawei has been facing after losing GMS only they're selling a lot more phones than before and there is more incentive for companies to port their apps to the new OS.

The problem that Microsoft faced was they never got past the hurdle of selling enough phones to attract developers to their mobile windows OS. Huawei does not have that problem.

It's kind of funny that they say "NextOS" is very different to "HarmonyOS" in that it is brand new and not based on AndroidOS at all. Wait. Hold up. Weren't you the ones, Huawei, that initially said HarmonyOS is NOT based on AndroidOS upon its announcement, launch, and review?

Well, it just makes everything more sceptic.
I mean the USA sanctions were supposed to keep Huawei "stuck" on older technology like Cortex-A76, Android v9 OS, and 8nm silicon. Well that same/next year they already made the leap to A77, v10 OS, and +7nm silicon. And now after many years since the hammer came down, they're still playing with AOSP, have a rogue ARM-China situation, and somehow are getting their hands on Taiwanese Silicon and advancing their in-house SMIC lithography.

Yeah, I would hold off on any praise and just be sceptical about everything.

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2024Speak for yourself. World doesn't revolve around west ... morebro, this is not just about the US or the west, it's about countries outside of China. How do you not get the point? These phones and these OSs are made for Chinese apps and such, so they don't care about global apps. They all have their Chinese alternatives and so people in China will be happy. What I was saying is that outside of China this is basically useless.

Btw Harmony OS isn't just a mobile/tablet OS. It's a cross platform one and will be backed by the CPC along with their people.

Poor Nokia didn't have the same leverage so they allowed USA to take over them. 😂

Now we have Huawei backed up by a market that is equal to many countries, with nationalistic pride on the line after repeated shaming from US. And you're still talking them down?
