And it will have a solution later this year.

Weird how some IBM Thinkpad from 2 decades ago can (unofficially and not very well) run Windows 11 whereas phones get updated for 2-4 years (or in some cases 7 in the manufacturer is really doing an effort) and then they are done. Not talking about practicality but technical possibility. Asus/Acer/Lenovo/Dell etc. don’t have to adapt the entire OS just to update to the newer version. Everyone gets the update at the same time like with Apple‘s operating systems. This is a concern when the time that people keep their phone gets increasingly longer (which is good for environmental and social aspects, it creates less waste that has to be recycled in the best case and people have to spend less money per year on their phone device)

If this depend to phone makers again, huh.. just keep your expectation low. You know how rare high price to perform phone with Snapdragon.

In other words, Qualcomm wants to sell old series chips using new names, for example 865+ becomes 870

Updates depend 100% on the OEMs, for example Samsung does not bother to update the drivers or kernel of its devices that is why it offers updates quickly even with UNISOC SoC.

Not only for cheaper phones. Oneplus, Motorola and Xiaomi only provide 3 years of updates even for their flagships

Just don't make the phones like pixel! It's enough with one expensive beta phone on the market!.

Instead of competing, Qualcomm is being greedy by increasing its prices and attempting to charge OEMs so that they can provide updates to their customers. You can see why Samsung no longer uses Qualcomm chips in most of its midrange offerings.

LOL. Do remember that in the past, Qualcomm was the one that simply drop driver support for their SoCs. Eg, Sony tried to support their phones longer, but had to beg Qualcomm for a special driver update.

Imo it's probably competition from Samsung (who is in the works of transitioning their flagships to Exynos) and Google (who use their own Tensor). Without Samsung, Qualcomm has to rely on Chinese OEMs, who are selling a lot less flagships than Samsung. Meaning it will be less money for Qualcomm.

This will be a paid service offered to OEMs , which being cost conscious will not vuy the service ..Chinese can already get fast, bug-free updates to Mediatek core AOSP builds along with drivers , but refuse to pay for it.

Qualcomm will do the same and Chinese OEMs will refuse to oay for Qualcomm updates as well.

If you want longevity for updates , then buy either Samsung or Pixel.

Just like DOJ only sued Apple for anti competition only after they became a trillion dollar company. And nokia already dead for decades.

This is what GKI Kernels comes right in. Google wants to support every OEM, specially for Qualcomm & MediaTek to ship GKI Kernels, starting version 5.10.** LTS and later.

The support depends on the specific chipset, which includes security patches & some Major updates that Google issued to the chipset manufacturer or even OEMs like Samsung.

Even and later some entry level phones do not receive a Major upgrade at the cost of time. But seeing sometimes receive a security patches instead.

But still overall, not the significant changes to Android upgrade, they will still stuck at the old fasion of upgrading the OS, which relies on the OEMs itself
