The specifications of the periscope lens are still not known. The 7 Pro's periscope had a focal length of 19.0mm, a minimum focus distance of 85cm and an effective lens diameter of 5.43mm, the 8 Pro has a focal length of 18.0mm and an effective lens diameter of 6.43mm.
If they use the full sensor area at 120mm this time, then the focal length should be roughly 19.8mm and the effective lens diameter would be 7.08mm (if the f-number is 2.8). But I fear that they again don't use the full sensor area at 120mm. We actually don't even know yet whether it will be advertised as a "4x", "5x" or for example "6x" periscope camera. I hope that it will capture distant objects better, but it definitely also needs a lower minimum focus distance.

IMX858 for a Selfie camera is a quite good one, the rest in Apple / Samsung world is okay, for the rest of the world mediocre 🤷‍♂️

Anonymous, 18 Jul 2024858 is 2x2 ocl. 🤮 I don't think that this is the case. Sony's website only states "all-pixel autofocus". If it was a Quad Pixel sensor (2x2 ocl), then I think that Sony would have indicated this on its website or do you have a source from Xiaomi or Sony?
So I guess that it's a dual pixel sensor. The previous sensor of the tele camera (possibly Samsung GM5) didn't have dual pixel autofocus.

So, dual pixel autofocus is currently the only known upgrade that the periscope camera gets. But nothing has been revealed about the lens of the periscope camera.

If this will be expensive with these specifications almost identical to the 8 pro, imagine next year's 10 with a tensioner under the tsmc casting uyy

Surprisingly the Samsung announced its new 50MP ISOCELL GNK as reported in GSMArena back in November 2023 but it was used in the Pixel 8?

More Sony sensors in the Pro models makes sense. Why not the main wide sensor? Same in my S23 Ultra (allegedly the best Samsung camera phone) and it has mediocre colours from main sensor (sensor made by Samsung). I guess only thing to do is get the Xperia 1 VI for 100% Sony sensors. Let Sony make the sensors, please!

Keep in mind that the source isn't very reliable when it comes to Google phones. The source predicted that the Pixel 7 Pro's periscope camera will use the Samsung GM1, this was definitely wrong (it likely used the GM5 or a similar sensor). The same source predicted that the Pixel 8 Pro's main camera will use the Samsung GN2, again this was definitely wrong.

IMX363, 18 Jul 2024Mediocre setup for a flagship cameraphone. The main cam... moreUpcoming imx903 is iphone exclusive .

Google will never pay for Exmor T tech.
Not even xiaomi and vivo pay for it.

Mediocre setup for a flagship cameraphone.

The main camera should have been upgraded to LYT-900, or at least IMX903 or IMX907.

The Ultrawide and Telephoto sensor is nothing impressive, only a tiny upgrade.

CamoGeko-XDA, 18 Jul 2024What I want them to say is that they won't use Tensor ... moreMaybe for the pixel 10. But expect a price in grease for that. Although the P9 will be too expensive with a Tensor.

For a minute I thought Google were switching to Samsung sensors but it's still the same sensor manufacturers from the P8.

Before you look it up, IMX 787 is the 1/1.73" 64 MP sensor used in the Pixel a series, as opposed to the 1/2.0" 48 MP sensor of the Pixel Fold.

What I want them to say is that they won't use Tensor anymore.

Oh, nice! 50 MP ultrawide on base Pixel 9. Hope they improve zoom levels: 8x --> 10x. Though, not much benefit without telephoto. Mayhap, if they switch to a scrumptious 200 MP sensor (even the HP3) ;)
