You may label android as bland, sluggish, vulnerable, or other things it lacks - and as an android user, I would not deny that a lot of them may be true, but that is where Nokia comes for.
Being one of the few manufacturers (if not the only one) position itself outside Android's ecosystem, I believe, has in fact provided Nokia a huge advantage. They can observe the ecosystem quite intensively, learning its strength and weakness, even learning how samsung can prevail and why big names like htc and sony struggle, even to the point when android starts to wane someday, without risking their position.
And when the time has come, Nokia should enter it with confidence. Of course, they come with the duty to patch holes in Android's body, as to being distinctive from other crowds. Given Nokia's renowned popularity in excellent hardware built and the likes, I have no doubt at all that they can do the job very well. I can even imagine they shout to their competitions, "Hey Samsung, hey Sony, let me teach you how to make an excellent phone!" You can say, Samsung Android may be bland, Sony's may be sluggish, but Nokia Android? Those bad things are not gonna happen! Quite a slap eh?
Speaking of competition, that is something wp ecosystem cannot provide. Though Nokia is not a lone contender in wp phones making, practically it has no significant opponent since Nokia is the only one going all out there. So it will be quite unsurprisingly that the majority of WP phones sold are of Nokia brands. Nokia's dominance is simply unmatched.
But in Android arena, things are different. Tens of manufacturers all fight intensively all the way to the pole position. Simply said, only the best will win - Samsung that is, for now. And back in 2000s, Nokia was the only one to beat Samsung in phone sales. It's such a pity not being able to see a tough contender like Nokia participate in the battlefield. Just like a feeling when great teams like Italy or Argentine being absent in the World Cup for instance.
That said, if Nokia were to go android, I don't think they should dump Windows Phone. It will be great to see those os walk side by side in harmony. Nokia has done a great job with wp, so there's no reason they cannot do the same with android.
But of course, if you reply by throwing things like "Nokia is on exclusive contract with Microsoft, such R&D is expensive, Nokia had financial trouble and MS paid them a lot of money to help them", I know by the point my daydream is over, at least for the foreseeable future. I'm no Stephen Elop, you see, and I can't change anything. Just feeling good to have some ideas, though.

Microsoft-Nokia deal was official and signed in april 2011 and their first WP7 was the Nokia Lumia 800(Sea Ray), which was first released in Nov. 2011. Samsung, HTC, LG and even Dell released WP7 smartphones a whole year before the Microsoft-Nokia deal. I think you don't remember, but there were rumours after the Micro.-Nokia deal that other OEM would be loose their license and WP OS would be Nokia exclusive, but it never happened. Still could happen but Microsoft still has the door open to other OEMs and signed deals with Huawei and ZTE.

As a user of both android and wp (though I myself prefer android), I admit that performance wise, wp is way smoother and better than android, even on my low-end lumia 520. It's probably because I don't use it too intensely other than basic calling and texting, as I trust the other jobs on my android, but though indeed wp is actually superior, sadly, better product does not guarantee better sales. History has witnessed excellent ones that sold and were received poorly, solely because they somewhat ignore the most important factor that determines sales - market trend and demands.
It is probably too early to judge Nokia's failure, but personally I think Nokia should gain much better than they currently do, and their place was already reserved, but they just won't bother. Android market is just too big to be completely avoided, at least for the time being, even if CEO Elop dislikes it personally. In fact Nokia should feel honored, as market still constantly push them into 'alternative path'. I don't know another company who gets those massive 'I wish they make' remarks, even honestly, if Sony or even Samsung were in Nokia's position now, i.e selling sole WP phones and ditch android altogether, l believe little will push them to change path, unlike that Nokia currently has.
Nobody could save Nokia but their consumers, and unfortunately, a lot of their long time loyalists are now outside their ecosystem. So, wp exclusivity deal aside, Nokia, you've given your best dedication to windows phone, and now maybe the time to share android some love, wouldn't you?

And I would say they are making tremendous progress. Google will not offer the same and Nokia will not have any advantage. But on the other hand I find it strange that they are trying to make WP8 consumer oriented. I mean it has the potential to become the best business phone - full windows integration and so on. And besides companies would pay for different services.

Bottom line is : Nokia sina sinking boat.
They also have 0.5 billion loan to be pay in one year. Bookia has no other source of income unlike sony lg and samsung, having low sales would lead the company to layoff employees and eventually RIP.

The only way to tell the difference is if you play a 1020p video. Then you can see some difference but it is because of the algorithms that are used to scale the image on the 720p screen. The advantage of the 1020p display is not that big to overlook the fact that more pixels means more work for the GPU and respectfully more battery usage. It would have been amazing if the new generation processors had been used for the 720 phones. I bet this would have really affected the battery life.
