UIQ is going nowhere, Sony Ericsson are done with it

22 Oct, 2008
Sony Ericsson doomed the Symbian UIQ platform by publicly stating at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London that "UIQ didn't attract the operator, manufacturer or consumer interest needed to stop it from failing"...

Thats really sad... Platform was good especially on Walkman phones
I`m still using my w950 and there is still nothing to compare with it on the market.

Now it`s time to switch to WinMo with HTC phones looking forward to Diamond either Touch HD

I've had a SE m600i and it's a great phone, but UIQ has some problems, at least on the m600i. The phone would restart automatically on me when I receive phone calls. Contacts and messaging were treated as regular applications, so making a phone call or sending a text sometimes became secondary to whatever slowdowns other applications were experiencing, rendering the phone's primary functions (making calls and sending texts) unmanageable and frustrating. It did have some good features, it just needed to be zippier and not freeze up as much as it did.

There is no point "investing" your time on a specific platform. So what if UIQ is dead. Whoever has a UIQ or is considering getting one, it won't matter if it will stop or not, as long as the specific phone is fully functional. Noone will buy a phone forever. Most people change them every year.
I currently have a P900 and P1. And as long as they work it won't matter if UIQ is dead. How about if there was a UIQ 4.0? It would still be totally different from my current one, so why not something else.
Good try SE, in my opinion much better than S60.

The G700 and G900 were just so medicore in looks and specifications, compared to the brilliant P1. No doubt that's why they didn't sell well. In my view UIQ had potential if it was in the right device. SE's attempt to create two plain and general phones with UIQ just didn't work as they were mediocre in so many ways. SE really needed to make more P1-like phones.

UIQ could have also done with some development, as it was on the buggy and slow side, but had a lot of potential. Look at the excellent walkman player in the W960 for example.

Had a UIQ3 phone once, and all I can say is good riddance. UIQ was terrible in many ways...

I've been a long time user of UIQ3... I'm sad about the platform being discontinued (after seeing talented hackers tweak into something way better than it was at first). Hopefully the people who produced great aftermarket projects will still show the same passion when SE switches to Symbian.

Yes UIQ is dead. There wasn't much in application development, but symbian Series that nokia and now samsung started using is rich with applications that creates a big market.

                        RIP: UIQ
Here lies the body of a platform that tried.
It came. It saw. It didn't matter.

Hey, its actually quite a good platform... pity. All it needed was a bit of a revamp. It works well, better than S60 IMO (cept s60 has better support).

All i can say is I hope that this symbian foundation thing comes through.

A shame, as it could've been a good platform and I was gonna get either a P1i or G700/900. I'll be getting Samsung's i7110 as soon as it's available.
