UIQ is going nowhere, Sony Ericsson are done with it

22 Oct, 2008
Sony Ericsson doomed the Symbian UIQ platform by publicly stating at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London that "UIQ didn't attract the operator, manufacturer or consumer interest needed to stop it from failing"...

I pray Motorola will not continue with their plans for the UIQ. They should concenrate on Android and polish the MotoMagx Linux OS to handle 3G!

UIQ was end not because of itself. But because SE devices are very low in specs.

If it isn't SE I think UIQ devices will not die in this day.

UIQ is just fine, but SE's half-hearted efforts at smartphones are the root cause of the problem. If SE could make a decent P990 replacement then perhaps the situation would be different. As for the other major partner, Motorola.. well, they haven't exactly been brilliant either, have they?

It's so laughable that Sony Ericsson are trying to blame others for the complete farce that their UIQ phones became:

"... failure of the UIQ platform to gain a steady fan base among users and a steady business case among network carriers"

Wonder why the steady fan base started to erode. Can anyone say P990?
Wonder why the carriers hated the P990? Bugs, bugs, slow, buggy, crashing and bugs. They tarnished their reputation with the carriers who got fed up with replacing phones and dealing with unhappy customers.

The way that Sony Ericsson treated their loyal UIQ users is shocking, having delivered one of the first touch screen interfaces on a phone and then sat on their laurels for years. It pains me to see how badly they mismanaged UIQ when it should have been a market leader.

While they got stuck in a rut focusing on the low end of the market, Nokia pushed S60 onto most of their phones gaining huge market share while Apple snuck in and showed them what a truly polished touch screen interface was all about.

Sorry Sony Ericsson, you blew it and it's going to take a long, long time to get that customer loyalty back.

SE never had a good idea for a smartphone, imho they wasted great opportunity to get a good slice of the smartphone market cake. They should keep making what they can do best - phones with mp3 player as the most advanced feature. Oh yeah, how could I forget - and with RDS radio receiver...

Thank God! They've been in denial and wasting to much time developing devices for it.

It's a really sad state of affairs. The 1st PDA i bought was a SE P900 which still works brilliantly today. UIQ even though was a failure considering revenue and popularity, was a good platform that didn't get the attention needed.

I hope that in the years to come, someone would take over the UIQ core platform, wipe the cobwebs off and start a fresh. Everyone and everything deserves a second chance.

actually i have a p1i and the UIQ platform is not bad at all , i'm used to it and i kinda love it, i understand why SE decided to kill it and i kind of saw it coming when they canceled the P5 , maybe WinMo is the way to go , or that unified thing , let the time play its role i say.

UIQ, May You Rest In Piece..

About time, I've worked in the mobile industry for years and symbian has been the bane of my life! i guess Sony Ericsson's little adventure into windows mobile with the HTC Xperia has opened their eyes to a whole new world of useful smartphones that had escaped them with the stupidly awful P-Series.

                                    Finally GSMARENA talks about it.
but still, they didnt mention that Symbian Foundation is brought to you by NOKIA. nokia have bought the rest of the market share of symbian to come out its open source Symbian Foundation with 52 compaines supporting it.. and the OS is base on S60 with some selected interface from UIQ,

It's a good platform, its support touch before S60.

But its devices is the real shame because of SE.(Main UIQ device)
