I agree that I'd like companies to focus more on efficiency, given performance is already absurdly good. Something in the likes of the 870, power-wise, with modern cores and fab process can lead to amazing efficiency, as we've seen with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 which performs similarly while being a battery king. And probably the upcoming 7s Gen 3 will be in the same ballpark.

They have l... moreSnapdragon 865/865+/870 still has plenty of overkill computing power for average consumers who don't do heavy intensive work or gaming. At this point, we should see chipset brands focus on giving better thermal and power efficiency while Google alongside Android OEMs get serious about making Desktop Mode a mainstream feature. We're at the point where people can easily use the smartphone as a PC and be the only computer one ever needs. Not so long ago during the days of Motorola Atrix 4G and ASUS Padfone, Android wasn't even smart enough to be used as a desktop.

Qualcomm and MediaTek can throw in any x86-rivalling speed they like, yet we'd still see smartphones with those flagship SoCs using a USB-C 2.0 port with no wired video output after all. At this point, USB-C 3.1/3.2 with wired video output support should be the mandatory requirement for smartphones with flagship SoC. There's no reason people can't use their smartphones with x86-rivalling firepower as their primary computer. Go to r/SamsungDeX and see how many don't even own a normal laptop because of DeX.

Impressive numbers, but thermal issues and battery consumptions will always be a problem on those high end chips.

I'm not a gamer so GPU speed means nothing to me. I'm glad there's an improvement though.

TheLastOracle, 21 Aug 2024That's an OVER 48% Improvement. That's seriously ... morein daily usage, if this GPU/CPU performance is used (gaming, photography, ...), the SoC will overheat AF. Smartphones are closed device no matter what/solution you put inside !
This is just a marketing strategy .... and i'm 100% dumbs will not be happy by this post !

What more interesting for me is that Google Tensor antutu is just about the same as Huawei Kirin.... So, considering that Kirin must do all the thing bythemself, kirin is not bad at all?

Snapdrago... moreFrom 1 to 1.5 is 50%
From 1.5 to 2 is 30%
So the 8 Gen 5 should be at least 3 million + 30% or around 3.9 million

What we need now is not heavy benchmark scores. They have little to no impact on actual performance, because of UFS 4.0 and LPDDR5X.
What we need is an improvement in thermals and power efficiency - not just high benchmark scores.
If I could custom make a Chipset, I'd use the 8 Gen 3 on a 3nm process, or the dimensity 9300 on a 3nm process. It'd offer more than enough power for years to come.
