What buttons did to deserve such a fate is unclear.

dbjungle, 27 Aug 2024Xiaomi has the courage to remove the buttons!Courage is not the correct word. There's nothing to be courageous about that. Nothing new in terms of tech. Just another gimmick to sell more. It's exactly the same remark as for cars lately. Everything is touch based and everyone agrees that it is not practical and even dangerous as you have to look at your infotainment screen to touch correctly. Ok, it's not dangerous on phones but it's the same principe. It's just not practical and there is not real justification or need to do so. The space you win by removing the little buttons and pressure sensitive plates below it have to be replaced by pressure sensors so the gain will not be great.

The HTC U12+ is the only phone that goes all touch / pressure sensitive like we've seen on gaming phones trigger button.

And if we talking about prototype phones, at least we have 2 (and possibly more) which is Vivo Apex 2019 and Meizu Zero (this phone doesn't even have port lol)

Dantmv, 27 Aug 2024It's just a prototype, I doubt it will go on sale open... moreI'd humbly disagree.
Using "under the skin" buttons on plastic body are best for IP rating, although industry didn't work on it too much.
Bigger problem for IP rating is the speaker. Not even the mic. Some Mics work ok even underwater, so you can seal them.
But, you weather-proof a speaker and its clarity and volume goes down.

As for this trend, I'm ok with 2-4 launches of this type, but I hope they don't force it to the entire range in 10 or so years.

Changing how these things work means a lot to people even if they don't realize. Yes they should protest against these anti-cosumer agenda carried out by OEMs this would put these OEMs under pressure and make them think twice before making anti-consumer moves.

I would wager that the market segment wanting less than a 6 inch display is well over the percentage of those in the market saying : "someone please get rid of these buttons before I lose my mind!''
