But why? I mean I know how good the controls are from the Xperia but no way it's that good. Still waiting on that Video Pro update.

Or maybe you wouldn't.
Anyway! I've had and used... SOO many phones, you have no idea. And I definitely see the difference detween resolutions.
Companies want to go cheap, like cheap Sony corp. - and I can understand why. But I wonder, what's your stake in it?!

sss, 28 Aug 2024very simple buy a simple 10 year old cameraPhones and cameras play two different roles, and the pocketable and lightweight nature of a smartphone makes all of the difference in choosing one over the other. If you think that people should just get an older camera, then you should also tell them to only buy entry-level or midrange phones instead of expensive flagships that provide poor value.
To be clear, I think a used camera+lens and a cheaper midranger is a much better purchase than the 1300€ they ask for the Xperia 1 VI.
You're obviously taking what I say personally because you prefer sony as a brand, please don't do that. Defending a company that doesn't care about you in the slightest is the reason some of these companies get away with pretty much anything... You're an independent being, take advantage of that and don't suck up to a corporation that sees you as pocket money

Anonymous, 28 Aug 2024Sony, for the highest display resolution installed on a pho... moreHave you actually viewed and used the phone? I have an Xperia 5 IV with a resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels, ~449 ppi and compared against the 1 VI with a res of 1080 x 2340 pixels, ~396 ppi.
I literally could not tell any difference even with my eyes an unrealistic 5cm away from the screen. From a normal viewing distance it is 100% irrelevant. I actually though the 1 VI screen was sharper and more vibrant.
I also value battery life over an extra few PPI just for bragging rights, which is pathetic and childish. It's a mobile phone, not an Olympic event.

Anonymous, 28 Aug 2024Former Samsung user who currently daily drives a Sony here.... moreInferior hardware does not mean it doesn't function. I've been able to get a lot of really nice pictures out of my Oneplus 6 over the years even if I had only a single focal lenght to choose from, and a rather blurry lens all things considered. My Iqoo 12 in that regard has totally changed the way I approach photography and it got me into macro insect photography. I'm not someone who only cares about specs, I actively use my Iqoo 12 as my only tool for creative expression through photography.
It's just that when put in comparison between other phones currently again (for the sake of the conversation, let's compare the Xperia 1 VI to others), the camera hardware is rather poor for the price you're paying. And since cameras are the main selling point of this phone, it really isn't a good look.
A 1/1.3" main sensor is about average for a global flagship nowadays, but many chinese brands have moved onto 1" sensors, with Xiaomi offering f/1.6-4 variable aperture. To be fair, most main sensors will pump out good images on nearly all phones nowadays.
Where the Xperia fails is its "secondary lenses", in fact the recent trend has been to stop treating them as secondary.
The periscope telephoto that goes from 85-170mm optically sounds amazing on paper, but with a 1/3.5" sensor it really lacks behind the competition. Most importantly, the optical quality of the lens is really really poor, much worse than any of the prime lenses we've seen from other manufacturers. It's bad enough that the supposedly optical quality ends up worse looking than digital zoom.
I think what Sony did here showcased why no other manufacturer tried adding a proper variable focal lenght zoom periscope lens, the optical quality isn't there yet. Maybe it'll be someday, but a dual tele setup or a single great telephoto is enough to make it look totally obsolete on launch. Optical clarity is a big selling point of phones like the X100 Pro where the 100m lens is certified by Zeiss as featuring proper apochromatic corrections that yield perhaps the best lens we've ever seen on a periscope yet.
Vivo also recently introduced their HP9 200MP 1/1.4" 85mm periscope, which is by far the best periscope overall for all kind of shooting, including macro.
Xiaomi offers dual telephotos, both with fast apertures to counterbalance 1/2.51" sensor sizes.
Oppo offers a dual tele setup as well, albeit with one 65mm using a 1/1.57" sensor and the other using a 1/2.51" sensor for the 140mm.
I could list a few more, but the point is, Sony's telephoto is worse in everyway compared to others, aside from the sheer concept of "full optical quality" across the 85-170mm range, which in practice doesn't achieve at all.
The ultrawide at 16mm isn't the widest thing out there, neither is the sensor size anything to write home about, which for a flagship of this price is not a compliment.
It's clear that the people in this thread disagree with critisms pointed at Sony, but I think it's important to make it clear how Sony phones aren't necessarily bad daily drivers. You can daily drive ANY phone. It's just that when taking the Xperia line-up out of its vacuum, it all looks really bad in terms of value and hardware.
No it is not acceptable to get such poor hardware on a flagship that's so expensive, if you deny that then you either don't know what other manufacturers are doing currently in terms of their hardware (AND software!) to truly push mobile photography forward, or you simply prefer Sony. I actually like a few of the things Sony did in their phones, but I refuse to contribute to such poor value offerings.
Let me ask one question though, what exactly makes Sony better for content creators?
Is it the manual controls? Other phones all offer pro modes with full control over each lenses.
Is it the image or video quality? Again, Sony aren't leaders in either of these things, whether it be hardware or software (The Xperia 1 VI's image processing is much worse than last year's for some reason, Sony most likely rushed it).
Is it the simple inclusion of the shutter button, sd card slot and headphone jack? Arguably some of the only things Sony does right, I love the dual stage shutter.
All other phones have access to the same set of software and chipsets outside of Sony's proprietary apps, so it must be the camera apps right? Even if they dumbed it down in the new releases?

Even with my current Xperia 1 iv, it's still the best creator-focused smartphone I ever used. Since I started recording videos in 4K/120, I really can't go back to 60fps or even 30fps ever again. I'm still not a fan of the new Xperia 1 vi because of the more generic 19.5:9 screen, so I'm hoping to see the 21:9 screen returning with an LTPO panel.
