Leak shows that HMD might be working on a camera-focused Lumia 1020 revival

03 September 2024
HMD is already working on improving its cameras - the Skyline was its first triple-camera phone, this might be its first quad-camera device.

What I find weird is a lot of people wanting this phone to have a flagship processor. The only time a flagship SoC is even remotely used is in games. Most of the time, the big processors in the SoC just sits idle/sleeping while the efficiency cores are doing the bulk of the work. A flagship SoC is the most expensive thing you can put on a phone (for it to function). If it's aiming to be a camera-centric phone, I rather they spend the resources on the camera sensors and an ISP or A.I. chip that will process the photos/videos like what the pixel does.

Bravosixgoingdark, 03 Sep 2024Unfortunately they'll most likely stuff in a 50mpx mid... moreOr worse, they could be charging 1500 euros for flagship killer hardware like Sony and use the "we wanted to make it thin" excuse.

They should make the screen corners sharper, very round corners look really bad with the lumia design.

People out there dont care about generic versions of apps, they wanted the official ones. Also , not having to use Google apps through browsers.

And yes, desktop version of W8 had much shorter life compared to other because interface was extremely different from the all previous versions. That was hiuge mistake.

Anyway, I highly doubt HMD will sacrifice design in favor of massive cam system like 1" 23mm + 1/2" 14mm + 1/1.56" 60mm for example.
Probably not even able to afford having .

                  Reason quadbayer is so popular.
To advertise 48/50/108/200 while still giving 12mp.

Majority is not even 15ms at 12/12.5MP , imagine how slow they are at full res. This is without counting all crap enhancement added to jpeg, that slows down even more.

As in, 24MP or 32MP Bayer, or 96MP or 128MP Quad Bayer. Even then, Quad Bayer is unnecessary if said phone has a zoom lens like a real camera.

I genuinely hope that they can metalenses work with both colour and zoom lenses, because then they'd be real on phones and able to work across a huge range of focal lengths. Zoom lenses on phones wouldn't just be gimmicks, and we could return to having only one camera sensor. Imagine a μ4/3"-type sensor on a phone that can go from 12-240mm without taking up absurd amounts of space, with a 32MP resolution to boot. Metalenses would make that dream come true.

I'm still impressed with how crazily good the software optimization is, especially on budget low-end devices. Not even Android Go can reach the same level as Windows Phone. It also pioneered the one-cable Desktop Mode feature years before Samsung DeX or Android Desktop Mode was even a thing. Frankly, the only reason I was forced to go back to Android was because of WhatsApp.

You search on Youtube for videos about photos of the Lumia 1020 VS any from this era and the Nokia almost humiliates the latest generation in some ways and sometimes comes very close to the top and we are talking about a phone that came out more than a decade ago*. wow, they used to make some really good things before. Not like today!

The leaked silhouette resembles the Lumia 1020, but the camera hardware is still anybody's guess. Maybe it'll have the same camera hardware as the Skyline but the telephoto has a longer zoom. It might even have completely different camera hardware altogether, who knows? Nevertheless, I hope HMD looks into flagship-tier mobile SoC for this future model. I don't mind if it's powered by Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 or Dimensity 9200+.

justasmile, 03 Sep 2024If they can make a Windows Phone (or any other metro-style)... moreOld Nokia did make Nokia X Android UI, maybe they should revived that X UI or at least revive Nokia Z Launcher.

And at that bring a flagship soc

having at least a 20-28 MP camera without pixel binning that's at least 1 inch should make it a viable cameraphone but if they want this phone to be taken seriously they need to have at least 1 good lens for zooming that's at least 1/1.56" or larger.

The 1020's digital zoom can put 90% of modern day zoom cams to shame. It seems so much more natural compared to other sensors. The newer sensors are made with pixel binning in mind, the 1020's sensor is made with being used as a full res cam AND as a 5MP one so it works extremely well when shot in full res. Besides, the colors and everything are spectacular.

Unless they can get some custom made huge, hi-res sensor that is able to take beautiful shots that you can zoom into as well without any loss in quality, this phone is going to get destroyed by everyone else. The 808 had a 2.5x larger sensor compared to the Galaxy S3 that was also 41 MP. That was a huge pull back then. Unless they bring in an APS-C sensor or at least an MFT sensor, this ain't gonna work at all.

I would love to be happily surprised if this happens but nothing about what HMD has done the last few years gives me and confidence that apart from exterior design that this so called 1020 inspired phone will have anywhere near the camera prowess the original 1020 did it that HMD will be targeting the best flagship smartphone camera systems on the market today.
