Leak shows that HMD might be working on a camera-focused Lumia 1020 revival

03 September 2024
HMD is already working on improving its cameras - the Skyline was its first triple-camera phone, this might be its first quad-camera device.

My point is they're giving a HORRIBLE camera for the price. If the 1 VI was 700 dollars it'd be a great phone but it isn't that cheap. Get outta here

Please make this phone like nokia 1520, width 85 not 75 or 76 as they use today and make the screen 6.9 inch. A lot of people will buy it. I have stil the nokia 1520 in red

"The 108+50+13MP setup of the Skyline certainly has solid hardware"

lol. That cheap 108mp HM6 sensor is not solid hardware. The only phone that has ever managed decent-ish photos out of it was the infinix zero 30. (Still overall bad in low light).

jiyen235, 03 Sep 2024hmm that sounds outlandish honestly lol like that huge lens... moreK Zoom has 20.7MP 1/2.3" .. Variant of sensor used by Sony Z phones.
While current xperia uses 1/3.5 portion of 40mp 1/1.7 sensor. It would do better if sensor was native 12mp bayer.
                  Can't compare.

Non-periscope zoom is too big. Phone like that today would not sell even 50.000, no matter if priced same of A35.

Lumia 808 shoots 38MP 4:3 mode, downsizing to 5mp to hide noise and artifact. Same trick later used by Sony ( 20.7 or 23mp to 8mp).
At something like 78mm equivalent, you have about 4 - 4,5mp. Reason ppl could not see difference between 1x and 3x.

Convenience of what xperia has is to keep resolution ( photo and videos) across entire range without any upscaling.

Just as curiosity, sony zv-1 with 24-70mm lens, the bump is about 20mm when retracted.

Please do not ruin something that is timeless
The fact that it was one and only in itself is what makes it precious
                    DO NOT RUIN IT

Anyways I think yeah, hi-res cameras nowadays are unnecessary on phones, I don't get the appeal really. Like especially for cameraphones. I wish there was a prototype kind of phone where we get hi-res cameras without having Binning down in mind as the only target, that'd be a cool example that we could see yk about how far phone photography can go.

What Sony has tried with the variable zoom is cool and all but it just is not the same as native zooming capabilities that the Galaxy K Zoom for example had, I'd go so far as to say even the Lumia 1020 would've destroyed the Sony in terms of zoom quality if they were both 3x.

Take a look at "WillitbeatNokia?", they had some amazing videos but sadly don't make videos any more it seems. I just hope RAW photography in modern day cameraphones is at least as good as the Lumia 1020 cus the auto mode at least to me seems super processed looking still. Only the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Oppo Find X7 Ultra can take somewhat natural looking images imo. I love Vivo and all but I always have a thing for natural images. If there were a way to have both Vivo's auto mode processing and a toggle for Oppo/Xiaomi style more realistic-ish processing then that'd be the dream phone for me rn. X100 Ultra's zoom lens, 14 Ultra's main lens (variable aperture included) and the Find X6 Pro's UW cam. The X100 Ultra already has some super cool features like tweakable global parameters like sharpening and stuff (Look at Jermaine's video on the X100 Ultra).

Idk man I think the smartphone market is scattered af rn, we need something good. And I think videography is being forgotten, we need consistently good videos with good metering. I love the Xperia/Xiaomi phones' videos but some lighting changes can really mess up their quality and they just don't look as pleasing as a result. Only setting a locked exposure helps them. Smartphones are still a ways away from being able to replace dedicated cams.

Mark my words it will be just another flop.
Even Chinese smartphones have 50 mpx (or better) on ALL cameras.
Pathetic to see 13 mpx in 2025 on a camera-centric smartphone.

                        Typical HMD DOA landfill trash.

But you can’t act like there is no advantage to a high end SoC, because there is even for those who don’t game. And it increases longevity as well.

Most midrange ISPs don’t even do 4K60. And flagship SoCs have the most advanced nodes, and larger cores driven at low frequencies are more efficient than small cores driven at high frequencies. And there is much more to an SoC than those areas I mentioned. There‘s no way around it, an SoC is the most important component of a phone because it combines so many smaller components. That is even more true with smartwatches that use SiPs.

YUKI93, 03 Sep 2024I have a Lumia 1020 in my drawer, and I can easily agree ab... moreSensor quality is the main reason. High res sensor that is made with the high megapixel counts in mind just made it a banger camera.

Besides, no one really talks about the flash. Only Apple seems to have invested in better flash modules in recent years. I don't think Apple's Pro series flash is better than the Xenon one but I do think they aren't worse either, they're both great in their own way. We need better flash modules in phones as well. I hope Chinese manufacturers talk with those big camera companies and get a cool flash like Nokia did, I mean Zeiss and Vivo are literally buddies now, ain't no way they can't get a cool flash.
