Leak shows that HMD might be working on a camera-focused Lumia 1020 revival

03 September 2024
HMD is already working on improving its cameras - the Skyline was its first triple-camera phone, this might be its first quad-camera device.

HeFixIt, 03 Sep 2024It was stupid of that Nokia executive to compare android to... moreNot really. Symbian was better than Android in almost every way except being user friendly. Android was weak by core system, that is among the primary reasons why other manufacturers didn't have high resolution camera like pureview. Nokia died because of carelessness, nothing to do with android. They did not put enough effort to modernize Symbian and later divided focus into Symbian and Java made it even worse. If they only had made it more user friendly!!

As much as I love the Lumia 1020 your comment is of a blind fanboy.
Your comment feels like Microsoft created the sensor out of thin air. The manufacturers have come a long way.
You're ignorantly giving credits to Nokia and also trying to say 1020 is still superior. The truth is
      1. It could happen because of Microsoft's excellent processing, nothing to do with Nokia.
      2. 1020 was something different, as was Pureview or s4 zoom. Comparing them to regular phones around that time is not justified. Even so, the galaxy Alpha coming just the later year was not that worse in still photography and was far better in video. Comparison with modern smartphones make no sense as modern smartphone will come on top in every way.

Finally stop that ignorant thought of saying quad Bayer is bad. I don't really get the people with GRANDPA VIBE and cannot accept change. The researchers know what they are doing. I have seen the Sony fans blabbering the same sh*t. I don't know what they say now that Sony themselves has started using them.

Quad/Multiple Bayer is the future and even the DSLR will adopt them in the next few years.(Only if DSLR were to be a thing, they will be replaced by Mirrorless.)

Ibn Batuta, 03 Sep 2024Only if NOKIA had shifted to Android or had improved Symbia... moreIt was stupid of that Nokia executive to compare android to "peeing in pants". Android would have literally saved them.
And with that pureview camera Nokia would have dominated the android world.
Samsung would have struggled with nokia being alive on android. It took some stubborn executives and a MS trojan (Steven Elop) to bring down the legendary nokia.

TheSnowWinterR7, 03 Sep 2024I understand about your choice, but considering I'm al... moremakes sense, but again if i am gonna carry a bulky camera anyways im just gonna buy a normal midranger and buy any good APS-C cam and im good to go.

Also, why not use Pro mode? I think Pro mode in most phones is extremely overlooked. Sony's normal shots seem like slightly tweaked Pro mode shots to me so if you take a shot in pro mode you can get similar results. Also, I don't think Google is similar to Sony at ALL.

Google looks to have a "clear" white balance, by that I mean they won't look for realism, they'll take any scene and try to correct it to a clear white balance setting that'll make the photo seem like it was taken on a room with white lights, even if the actual lighting is cool/warm. The closest competitor to Sony for me is Xiaomi's Leica Authentic, that phone is probably the most overhated phones out there rn and the Vivo X100 Ultra's tweakability is the most underrated. Did you know the X100 Ultra allows you to change all the global parameters like sharpening and stuff in Auto mode? Watch Jermaine's Lens's video on it. Besides, I think a 1 incher in Pro mode can easily destroy Xperia's 1/1.35" sensor any day of the week I mean a 1 incher can put a 1/1.12" cam to shame. Oh and what's so special about Exmor T anyways? Look at Shibi-Chan's video comparing the Xperia 1 V to the X100 Pro's RAW photos, the Xperia looked like a midranger.

jiyen235, 03 Sep 2024I respect the sd card slot and headphone jack a lot, their ... moreI understand about your choice, but considering I'm also eyeing a Sony Alpha camera in the future with Xperia being the closest to bring the experience to the smallest, easiest form factor that I can have for now to experience Alpha (same as iPod Touch to iPhone when still on sale until 2022), plus the integration with Sony Alpha for connectivity is the one I'm also eyeing (ecosystem integration is really a king these days) and my preferences for nearly natural photos mimicked a true mirrorless camera that most Android and even my own iPhone 13 Pro Max unable to deliver in my opinion (too oversharpened, oversaturated). The only Android phone I am aware to have a similar colour science to Sony is the Google Pixel. I agree that the telephoto lens (and also ultrawide lens, despite being solid) should get an Exmor T upgrade in Mark VII, but my Xperia camera experience has been satisfactory. 4K@120fps video recording on all lens and dedicated physical button (instead of capacitive on upcoming iP16) contribute my exclusivity to Xperia outside MicroSDXC card slot.

                Tech Guy, 03 Sep 2024You can expect 200MP main + 50 MP Ultra-wide + 50 MP Sony L... moresource? also why a 200 mp main but a 1 inch telephoto/uw cam?!!?!

AStolfo, 03 Sep 2024There are a lot of reasons why no one will ever come close ... moreHuawei came close to the dedication but they were dedicated in making the perfect "smartphone" camera. By that I mean they want whatever "most" people want. For example the type of photos that get you high scores in Dxo and ones that people generally like. Unrealistic HDR and artificial details are the key identifiers of this sort of processing which can also be seen in Apple, Google and Honor phones.

Till the Mate 40 Huawei was looking for "pop" in photos but in a realistic manner like tweaking photos from a dedicated camera in lightroom or something, but after like the P50 series they went full steam towards the artificial look. And Huawei still has that dedication you spoke of, their 1 incher has a RYYB sensor or whatever it was called i don't remember, it's an atypical one and made specifically for the Pura 70 Ultra, even if it's an IMX989 it's "better".

Also I agree on the fact that the sensor was the main star. It wasn't a quad bayer or any binning thing, it was just a pure sensor that was just made to shoot as is or at best just downscale/descale to 5MP or something to save space but still look great since it was descaled from 41 MP.

Nowadays phone cams are made with stacking and stuff in mind which makes full res shots look abysmal. We need something like that back. Panasonic tried something with the CM1. I hope there's something like that again, Xiaomi/Vivo/Oppo have ties to some huge camera manufacturers, hope they can make something like that. We desperately need some "real" cameras in smartphones.

Or maybe it's all a plan made by these camera manufacturers? Keep normal people happy with these artificial overprocessed photos and make enthusiasts buy big bulky, and also expensive cameras/their lenses to satisfy their cravings for great, realistic photography?

TheSnowWinterR7, 03 Sep 2024Well, the MicroSDXC card slot is purely the reason I chose ... moreI respect the sd card slot and headphone jack a lot, their DAC is also a good one, I've heard some audiophiles say, but that doesn't justify the camera hardware for me at all.

You do you my friend but for me it's a huge deal breaker to not have great hardware especially for that price. If Sony put an LYT-900 main cam with variable aperture and had a pair of LYT-600 sensors for the other cams, i'd have bought an Xperia 1 series phone myself.

I really need flagship that have expandable storage to accommodate my impulsive photography hobby. Even though there are better flagships than Xperia, when there is no expandable storage, it's an INSTANT dealbreaker. I probably can live without a 3.5mm jack. but not expandable card slot. And yes, I filled all of my 256 GB of Xperia 1 II's internal storage, but there's at least 91 GB room for the MicroSD card slot, so there's that.

Since when Sony are known for flagship killer, either price or the hardware? All their flagship from first Xperia (Xperia X1) to 1 VI always been offering are full-flagship.

I'll wait until official details come in. Anything can still happen from here onwards.

Im waiting for HMD 4.5" phone

They failed to revive anything from the brand for over a decade, offering mediocre midrangers at absurd prices until they finally lost the rights to both Nokia and Zeiss, and I couldn't be happier.

I just wish they would've gone out of business completely.

HMD is a scam trying to milk anything they can out of icons from days gone by, without having the means the ambition or the know-how to ensure any proper "revival". This won't be any different.

                                  I hate them.

There are a lot of reasons why no one will ever come close to taking the crown off from the Lumia 1020/Nokia 808.

Sure, sensors have gotten bigger/modern, there's better software and tweaks and whatnot, but that's nothing if your sensor is trash + you have poor lenses, which is something not only HMD fails at, but also other companies, like Samsung.

The sensor inside Lumia 1020/Nokia 808 was a custom one. It wasnt a "off-the shelf" model. It was made by Toshiba for Nokia. No one else used it. It also wasn't a Quad Bayer sensor. It was a full blow RGB one, which is why it took a while to read its information and dump it into memory (and at the time, cpu's and memory wasn't as fast as today).

I think only Huawei ever came close to getting to the same level of dedication with the P30 Pro, but that was because they poached some of the talent that Nokia had for its cameras. Apple could pull it off, but they are more worried about selling new colors and AI trash. And I do not expect Samsung to do anything at this point. They are more than happy to be selling the same crap every year.
