In my humble opinion, they should aim for a small, lightweight device, a single but powerful camera, last year's chipset is ok for SE, some bezels are ok, loudspeaker should be bassy and fun... but the price should be under $350 or max $400.
Beyond this price, it starts competing against last to last year flagship iPhones.
Plus it loses what is essentially the concept of SE.

PureOS, 03 Sep 2024Bad news, especially for people sensitive to bad pwm dimmin... moreYou don't get it, OLED screen are now so cheap so even low end phones can afford it. No one cares about your PWM because this only affects small percentage of people. In other words OLED is more superior screen technology than LCD and LCD is going to get extinct soon, here you go.

Lol, OLEDs will overtakes by shipped display only this year?? WTF?? OLED has been mainstream screen technology on flagships since 2014 at least. And also top 10 weekly most popular phones GSMARENA provides fcouple of years now had phones dominating with OLEDS at the moment all 10 carry OLEDS by weekly bases, only in some weeks some outlayers getting to TOP 10 like 1 phone with LCD screen and it is super budget phone mostly. Wow, I guess the developing markets with their crappy phones were pushing LCD numbers always too high.

DomtheCuber, 04 Sep 2024I really hope that Apple has some way to make sure that peo... moreApple has been absolutely silent on the pwm issue.
I do not expect it to be mentioned unless legislation regulates pwm flicker, or it becomes a marketing point of better selling phones. When the two biggest competitors in USA (Samsung, Pixel) are also selling flickering displays, there's really no incentive to change.
In the USA, the outdated ThinkPhone, several low-end LCD phones, the two OnePlus phones, and iPhone SE are the only phones you can get without eyestrain.
I've read that the next generation of Samsung OLEDs will have high frequency pwm. If true, that will eventually bleed over to the iPhone.

PureOS, 03 Sep 2024Tell that to my eyes. LCD is far better for eye health, tha... moreOLED has it's benefits, infinite contrast and turns of individual pixels, OLED is the reason always on display works on the iPhone, Apple originally enabled it with the entire display and it drained so much battery they just did the android version with the time/date/notifications.

PureOS, 03 Sep 202480$ most basic redmi a3 comes with 90 hz refresh rate. Its ... moreApple are not trying to wow their customers with the latest technology, it's more about the user experience, also if they refresh rates above 60 FPS it would eat into battery life and a lot of smartphones actually disable the higher refresh rates and resolutions by default anyway.

ishreal, 03 Sep 2024"which will hurt Japan Display and Sharp, as they were... moreNot really.
Sharp and Sony phones are completely dependent on LG for their displays for their smartphones, and it's notable by the heavy blue/purple cast on their OLEDs and temporary image retention on their IGZO/QLED/Tri luminous-branded displays. For larger displays however, it's a different story.
What matters is how they implement it, not those who manufacture/supply it.
