Fairphone 5 now has a cheaper 6/128GB variant and a new color to go with it

04 September 2024
The phone originally launched with a single 8/256GB configuration, but it was fairly pricey (it has received a price cut since then, though).

More like VirtueSignalPhone. With specs like these in a few years it will be barely usable, broken and repaired or not. The new color should have been brown.

Anonymous, 04 Sep 2024Love Fairphone, but they don't sell in the USA (so no ... moreAlso forgot to mention, if you have a phone with 7 years of support, thank Fairphone who proved that it's possible with the SD801 and that Google, Samsung, etc. had been straight up lying to you for years about their ability updates. So even though Fairphone sells very little (less than 300k phones/year) and is difficult to acquire or find aftermarket parts for, they have been a net positive and we are all better off because of their existence.

All because someone was bold enough to try.

Love Fairphone, but they don't sell in the USA (so no parts) and buying from Murrena is a scam because they will void your warranty (which is against the law) if you remove the /e/OS and install CalyxOS or stock Fairphone OS.

If your battery dies, you can't get a replacement shipped from Europe. Parts for the FP3 are difficult to find now.

Still, much respect to a company doing things the right way.

But if you get like Poco X6 Pro for 300 euro and it will have 3 OS updates done and ends security update then get another phone from Xiaomi for 300 euro in 2028 and you have hardware update and next 4 years of updates.

If fairphone for 600 euro would have minimum SD 8+ gen 1 then it would make sense for next 10 years of use but it is with a chip that gives you half of the performance so after all the 7 plus OS update it be a snail brick

Fairphone 2 and 1 still not in your database

Anonymous, 04 Sep 2024Ppl here: - Nice, but it should be $300 at most becaus... morePeople forget that business isn't sunshine and rainbows, there's a reason why costs of more expensive features such as OLED have gotten so low, workers are being overworked and underpaid and even laid off in favor of machines, raw materials come from shoddy sources and companies use the "we're going green" card as an excuse for poorer build quality and materials. If they really were green they'd have tried to make it easier to repair phones, not make them more and more difficult.

I swear some people here like to praise these huge companies like they're their wife or something. These companies don't care about you and only want to take advantage of you. I've studied business a little and know some business men, so I know a little about how things work. It's not pretty.

It isn't cheap making high quality products with society and the environment in mind. Contrary to popular belief, these huge companies always take advantage of marginalized communities in smaller countries like Vietnam to make chips, work in factories, etc.

Anyways what's the problem with Fairphone existing? They aren't hurting anyone, they're paying their workers and suppliers fairly, so there's nothing wrong happening. I might use a super top tier flagship but that doesn't mean I'll not respect what Fairphone is doing.

The brand dares to give a 24 months warranty, the brand dares to claim that their phone will still work smoothly for 48 months, brands dare to give 4 years support even for $100, their battery claims can last 1600 cycles and many more... this is what you will read every new launched phone that GSMArena will post.

How can you completely miss the point of the phone? You cannot compare it to a mass produced sweatshop device.

rizki1, 04 Sep 2024If this phone is intended for long-term use, why does it ha... moresocial enterprises like Fairphone use materials that are good for the environment, pay workers with at least acceptable wages/employ less privileged workers to better improve the social space and also intend to be good for society as a whole by for example making it easy to repair. Once you factor in all those costs, and add the fact that Fairphones aren't popular, are a niche device brand and thus don't make many units, they don't get economies of scale. So their raw material costs are high as well.

Nothing most likely has sold more Phone (1) or Phone (2) than all of Fairphones combined. Gotta consider all of those factors. And if you want to see why niche phones are expensive, look at the Zenfone 11 Ultra (a gaming phone turned into a normal phone) or the Xperia 1 VI (a "flagship" that's for enthusiasts). Even with the Xperia/Asus's mediocre hardware for their market type, their price is sky high. If Asus and Sony can do it, why can't Fairphone? At least Fairphone is trying to do good for the people.

I commend them and if possible would donate to them, but I'd need a good reason to buy one myself. If they can provide a Nothing Phone 2a level phone for ~800 euros I can give em a shot, I only NEED a phone of that caliber and I'm considering buying a dedicated camera anyways. I'd just need a phone with a decent battery life, an OLED that is 120 hz and FHD+, uniform bezels and power that's similar to the Nothing Phone 2a that's all.
