New iPad mini has a downgraded A17 Pro chipset

17 October 2024
It looks like a binned version with a less powerful GPU.

People aren’t buying an A17 Pro ok, nobody walks into an Apple Store and asks ‘do you have any A17 pro chips in stock?’. They’re buying an iPad mini, and the new one is better than the old one, end of story 🤷

Sandeep , 19 Oct 2024But Steve Jobs' Apple computers was a pure performance... moreI don’t disagree with what you say: Steve Jobs certainly was at the heart of this company and a driving force behind innovation.

In fact, Apple’s sales strategy may stop working at some point if customers perceive a lack of value for their money. However, I’m guessing that this would take a while given that many iPad users are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, having also iPhones and MacBooks, Apple TVs, accessories, paid apps, etc. They may also have little interest in getting used to another OS like Android or Windows.

But let’s not forget that investors (and managers) often care more about short-term financial success, which may come at the expense of future profit. In the end, these tech companies don’t exist to make us users happy, but to make money. Thankfully, with enough competition, these two things usually go hand in hand, at least in the long term.

after long wait, they should use A18 instead of binned A17 pro, A18 is way better than A17. I think apple is just need to get every product to get minimum support for apple intelligence, other than that not much upgrade in hardware. And all now all ipad support for apple pencil pro or usb c, apple now can remove both first/second gen pencil to force you purchase new pencil if you upgrade from older model

Anonymous, 18 Oct 2024Not that it matters since it runs on iPadOS.And it's also not getting Stage Manager despite the A17 Pro using the same architecture as the M3. I wish Samsung would make a Tab S10 mini instead of concentrating on the Z Fold series. It's not hard to find many who prefer small tablets over foldable screen phones, especially when the latter still has questionable reliability and high repair cost.

St. Peter, 17 Oct 2024It’s refreshing to read common sense comments like this one... moreBut Steve Jobs' Apple computers was a pure performance machine. No frills. That's why he was removed. Because these 2 penny worth stakeholders were there only for that earning profit. They ran down this company to the ground. No innovation in the last 10 years. Anyone remembers iPhone 5. It was the worst Apple design ever.

Actually Apple is being pus day by day. iphone 16 with side touch? They can't find anything to add.

Now iPad mini 7 without A18 and cellular?

Naah.. They actually don't want you to buy it.

Now like having an up to date os gives you that much, funny how much people started worshipping software support as soon as companies started using it as a marketing tool, whereas before (when it actually mattered more) no one cared. Like yeah it's nice to have but it's not worth sacrificing a ton of other stuff for.

xPandamon, 18 Oct 2024Apple does not mention anywhere what their chips have to do... moreIt would be deceitful if Apple promised more specs out of the chip than it delivers, they don't. And I'm sorry but most people have bigger issues in life to focus on than some 'on paper' performance hit. Those who update from earlier model iPad mini's will only see an increase in performance.

Bottom line is the new iPad Mini is an improvement over the old iPad Mini, and for the same price. You want to let all this bug you though, by all means carry on 🤷‍♂️

Any iPad without an M1 is already e-waste. There are already features, apps and games that require a minimum of M1. It’s hilarious that Apple would launch it with specs equivalent to the base iPad which is so terrible only schools buy it. The Mini is not an iPad SE!

DaFink, 18 Oct 2024Show me where in any official Apple documentation it’s stat... moreApple does not mention anywhere what their chips have to do. That's an issue. Everybody else labels weaker chips differently if they are still sold despite a core being broken, inability to clock as high as it should or whatever. Apple are the only ones that don't, which is very deceitful. And yeah, it pisses of people like me that won't buy Apple products regardless, because Apple buyers just make excuses for it as the comment section tends to prove.. Losing a GPU core means losing 17% performance in this case, at least on paper. That is, simply said, "not cool".
