Huawei announces HarmonyOS Next - the new version of its Android rival

22 October 2024
A new dawn for Huawei software is upon us.

Is there any practical reason for this being entirely separate from Android? As in, how does this benefit the end user exactly? From the dev side of things, surely it’s annoying for developers to have to make a new app for the Chinese domestic market, even if the porting process is simple. And given that the AOSP code base is open source, preventing any sort of ban in that sense doesn’t make sense either.

      Times like these I miss Symbian OS, I wish Nokia would do something like this. Innovate off from Android and use their Symbian OS out of something.

      The Symbian OS was not that perfect, but it was good and has compatibility with not just Symbian Games but also J2ME, that was the best part of it.

          This is not Android anymore at this point

              hauwei should start inviting xiaomi, bbk and others who are interested.
              it will make a better app availability and not like windows phone situation.

              a unix based os for devices would be great for a third os.

                justasmile, 23 Oct 2024No sideloading, nope.How do you know? Do you own one? I doubt they would'nt allow sideloading on countries that prevents monopoly so yeah. Stop spreading false info when it hasn't even released globally yet.

                    this is sad news for usa.
                    china is making leap progress than usa.
                    if they this is good china will be more independent than any other country in tech.
                    having its own tech for digital is far superior than using others' tech, specially in today's world.
                    usa can't oversea china but china can.
                    other countries should be on alert and start thinking about their own technologies.

                          I'm actually interested in getting Huawei os because it's the best - android without Google. Like perfection.

                          But no side loading would be a blocker for me

                            The power move for Huawei now;
                            Is that they are the chip maker and OS maker,
                            This could make them have the integrity of Apple if they coded the software & hardware in the right efficient harmony.
                            .
                            In this case, if Android found its lightweight, efficient, higher performance, lower power consumption, more suited features competitor;
                            Then Apps and better performing games are just a matter of time.

                              Epic store's push to bypass the app store can have compounding implications on app development

                              Secondly EV global adoption carrying harmony next out in the world

                              Iot devices etc, I think the odds are reasonable it'll be backed by the entire china

                              If they can capture emerging markets like say Africa with some entry level stuff the could get some momentum

                              I'm at least sure it has better success potential that kaios.. that was recently successful

                                    Bipolar. That was the US strategy in the face of a rising China. If they couldn't control everything, they'd split the world in two and control their half. But, personally, I think that's just wishful thinking. They'll just end up isolating themselves.

                                        I actually prefer EMUI and MagicOS over Stock Android/Pixel UI. Hell, I think OneUI and iOS are better than Stock/Pixel UI.
