ARM is dropping Qualcomm’s chip design license

23 October 2024
The current situation traces its roots to a legal dispute between the two firms from 2022.

Qualcomm had to expect a response and if true this is not a response I expected as I didn't want to post speculations

In my first of two posts I briefly touched on the 16/12/2024 Federal case in Delaware.

Arm is suing Qualcomm the case is 54 days away however let me share with you why this 60 notice is relevant

Nuvia Oryon is NOT licensed by Arm to alter Arm SoC only Qualcomm is. Nuvia even though bought by Qualcomm licences cannot be Transferred

Tentatively I write Snapdragon 8 Elite (stupid name) Oryon is not and was not licensed by Arm. If I interject one pertinent point for Arm if Nuvia were not sold and Nuvia wanted to be a "competitor" of Qualcomm it would be paying Arm a lot more than it is or was.

Tentatively Nuvia Oryon is not per Arm licenced, so Qualcomm in releasing S8 elite is in defiance 60 days from now neither will be Qualcomm.

My take just on this story is
    (Y) to indicate to the Judge that Qualcomm did this, so we Arm responded
    (Z) Document Served by Arm on Qualcomm (before S8 Gen 3 ) essentially cease and desist not to use Oryon on mobile SoC, which and I really really don't know Qualcomm have assured Arm it would not...And yet here we are

(I've "saved" the A-X as that is speculation and I haven't seen ORIGINAL source material to establish a theory which is correct

There is a sliding scale between what Arm WANTS and what if any Qualcomm is currently paying, a fair amount will be determined by the Judge will ultimately decide if it does go that far with any ensuing appeals

Atm imo, there is a shift in 100% in Arm's favour as after 60 days Qualcomm can't continue with TWO licenses withdrawn

And we haven't even seen D9400 V S8 Elite go head to head, yet we already have thermals

WickedS, 9 hours agoSnapdragon have the license to make custom cores. The compa... moreAccording to Arm Nuvia licence was for servers not Consumer device, so it's not like Qualcomm is 100% right.

But whatever reason They shouldn't go this far, I can't see anyone benefit from this other than Apple.

Anonymous, 11 hours agoPurchasing nuvia was clear sign of wish to have own design.... moreThe discussion is not trying to PROVE what qualcomm wish /intention is regarding their custom cpu

The point was suggesting a means where they can achieve said goal without immediate consequences
Like their licence being revoked in a covert way

        How is buying nuvia covert?

Look! Companies that hold patents always want to squeeze and want more profit from consumers who use their patents.ARM's foundation has already shown signs of their greed and ego for fear of their technology being outclassed by their consumers. If the ARM case continues to drag on and there is no resolution, one day you will go bankrupt and everything will be dominated by risc-v which is more open source for risc instruction set. IF ARM ACT WORSE AND EVEN WORSE I HOPE THEY WILL GET BAD KARMA AND LOSE THEIR DOMINANCE.

This could lead to delayed device releases, or even a price hike for Android phones. But on the flip side, this may turn out to be good news for MediaTek, since the delays may lead to OEMs looking for alternative chipmakers for their smartphones

No way Qualcomm actually loses their licenses. Either Qualcomm wins in court, or they'll negotiate a new deal with ARM.

seems like mediatek bribing arm for this step.....

Rosso, 11 hours agoCan't figure out if this is about the instruction set ... moreGood question, and no it isn't clear from the article. I remember that whilst originally 'Kryo' cores were fully in house Qualcomm designs, later iterations of Kryo were semi custom modifications of Cortex cores built using the BOC (Built on Cortex) licence Qualcomm signed with Arm. Maybe this is a hangover from some of the terms and conditions in that licence agreement 🤔

All I know is it would be in the interests of both parties to get this one straightened out lickety-split 🤷‍♂️

Qualcomm probably have a CPU architecture hidden somewhere.

and Linux kernel developers are tired of all the intel amd x86 hardware bugs, the next gen hw will probably be the best yet

Qualcomm will certainly work it out for now... But this is a pretty big boost for RISC-V.

Both company's future is at stake but if arm goes with this decision, more damage will be to arm
                                        1) They will lose on the major customer
                                        2) more and more companies will try to get away from arm
Looks like arm is on self destruction mode.
