I Just Read, 01 Dec 2024Apps 'follow the market' or to be precise the OS ... moreWell, Google didn’t and doesn’t want a third player. Google simply refused to make any apps for Windows Phone, thus its demise. Even without the ban, if Huawei became a third OS platform, Google would refuse making apps for it, and the market will take care the rest, ie killing it. People just want their GMail and YouTube. A smartphone without those won’t go anywhere. Look at Amazon Fire.

potato4k, 29 Nov 2024People forgot Windows Phone. Microsoft couldn’t even do it ... moreApps 'follow the market' or to be precise the OS on the phone which is dominated by Apple and Google.
Microsoft for example could release a mobile phone OS today which would again be mirroring its PC version
The disastrous WP 10 shown months before release to flawed in ALL beta test still released WP 10 effectively end Microsoft (Lumia) phones.
BlackBerry 10 BB another OS is alive and well albeit in the Driverless vehicle arena due to its security (App support dropped due to low BB phone sales)
The point is adoption a lot of Android phone manufacturer (everyone?) would have to adopt it HANDSET SALES, then Apps would follow. So yes people are aware Huawei phones lack Google Mobile Services and are purchasing Android / iOS instead.
I agree with you in the current scenario of Huawei not having Google apps, however and the reason for the preamble is unsanctioned Huawei could would be the installed OS with Gmail etc being third party app so like Apple
Huawei can't sell phones in the volumes it did before sanctions, it's own OS has allowed it to continue. Huawei needs the sanctions lifted for it to expand abroad Apps will then follow.
Microsoft App to me all seem focused on catering to Apple, best leave it there, no WP10 are you kidding me

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2024this is why Huawei should only focus on dominating their ho... moreTelling that Android an iOS are 99% in China is not explanatory. Android in China is not the Google-locked Android and also includes HarmonyOS whose level of penetration is the same as iOS. From HarmonyOS to HarmonyOS_NEXT the jump in China is not colosal as people are used to different Android forks and user interfaces. It is only provision of apps which make the difference but if there are 100 000 apps for NEXT next year this won't be significant issue. One should also take into account that generally people in China are in combative mode regarding sanctions and one can expect massive popularity and drive to change to NEXT.

People forgot Windows Phone. Microsoft couldn’t even do it back then, when app market was still a Wild West.
In the end, people will want their Gmail and YouTube. Without those, it would be difficult to be a third platform outside China.

Devs always refuse to develop apps for 3rd mobile OS and that's bad for consumer. And funny you bring some woke statement while no one's going political here other than YOU.

There are more than 1 billion smartphone users in China, that is 3 times more than the US. Huawei should aim at dominating their home turf first before they try to go international. If you are an app developer, 1 billion potential customer is more than enough motivation need to make apps for HarmonyOS Next. Without Google competition in China, Huawei can take their time to increase their market share inch by inch. They will eventually get there. It's also good for their national security to not totally rely on foreign OS.

Imagine if one one global Huawei user can't use Whatsapp they would be furious yeah sadly its the one used mostly at least in SEA and unless cross platform chat is available for Telegram then likely they wont do it.

I really wonder what will happen with those who want to buy Huawei in Europe or already bought a device now in 2024. I think Harmony Next will never be global.

Magnificent Suleiman, 28 Nov 2024I doubt they'll ever push for a worldwide launch, migh... moreThinking that HarmonyOS_NEXT fate is like Nokia Symbian or Microsoft WIndows Phone is nonsense. HarmonyOS is already well established in China (similar penetration to Apple OS), and phone market there is double the EU+US combined. People there are used to different forks of Android and Google Mobile Service is not utilized so they are not tied to this scum. Thus if there is sufficient number of apps people will not even notice if they use NEXT (or they notice since it is reportedly very sleek). Huawei is extremely well prepared for the provision of apps used in chinese internal market since for the start there are 10 000 of them and next year there will be 100 000.

As much as I'd like to see a new mobile OS, Harmony isn't it. It'll be interesting to see if the government promotes it, as that will make or break it.

astolfo, 28 Nov 2024"HarmonyOS Next is a new operating system by Huawei&qu... moreYou are incorrect. HarmonyOS came to being as a multi-kernel system.
Before it shipped on phones and tablets it was released for routers, watches and TVs.
The HarmonyOS kernel on those devices was this same pure HarmonyOS kernel that is shipping on HarmonyOS NEXT (but improved). Nothing at all to do with Android.
When HarmonyOS came to higher memory devices like phones and tablets, it shipped with a modified AOSP kernel. That was for app compatibility reasons and was logical.
Therfore, claiming HarmonyOS is a fork of Android is incorrect. From day 1 it was a multi-kernel system which uses appropriate kernels depending on the device.
At some point there will be a single, unified kernel. This was announced on the 2019 release roadmap so is nothing new.
