Google's Pixel 10 devices to use a yet-unannounced MediaTek modem

It's an interesting move for sure.

ArthurGD3, 16 Dec 2024Tensor G5 is in certain respects a big upgrade over the G4.... moreIt's the same N3E that Snapdragon 8 Elite and Dimensity 9400 uses, and the CPU is basically a copycat of what's in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It's hard to go wrong with this CPU configuration unless the sched_pixel scheduler do something stupid. Which I'm still afraid of even I am holding a OnePlus 13 rn and won't go back to Pixel for a while.

Anonymous, 16 Dec 2024Better than Exynos, that's for sure. With a TSMC chip... moreWell, although Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC are manufactured by TSMC now, some of their modems are still manufactured by Samsung, e.g. the X71 thats currently in iPhone 16 series. Part of it being on Samsung 4nm and part of it being on samsung 14nm. The new C1 by Apple is on TSMC N4. I'm sure that the mediatek modem google chooses is also manufactured on a fairly advanced TSMC node, since that's Mediatek, being in the same region as TSMC.

Seems like some mediatek people were hired by Google otherwise it couldn't explain the similarities between Tensor G6 and Dimensity 9500's CPU configs.

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2024Hope there will be a great improvement over previous pixel ... moreMaybe you can buy iPhone and switch back to Pixel 11 if needed. The CPU config for Tensor G6 is much closer to the concurrent flagship (specifically, Dimensity 9500) than Tensor G5.

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2024X50 on 855 and 865?X50 is an independent modem that couldn't fit into any SoC. SD855 itself doesn't support 5G. SD865 doesn't integrate a modem but uses X55 as the external one. Since SD triple 8 onwards are the modem integrated.

You can really blame the authorities there for allocating 6GHz to cellular instead of WiFi when even the 4.9GHz N79 have seen very reluctant adoption, both for end user devices and signal towers.

Like the s5300 modem in Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 is un-fixable by software updates because, well, the hardware is crap as hell. The s5400 in Pixel 9 is just a lot better without any kind of software tweaks kicked in, as there were Chinese users rooted the phone to use 5G in China and they claimed they didn't experience overheating issues like in the case of s5300.

As far as early Tensor G6 rumors this seems to take effect because Dimensity 9500's CPU config is just Tensor G6's plus an additional X930.
I think some people from the now nuked zeku department of oppo also go to google because the IMG DXT in tensor g5 was once chosed by them for their DoA first SoC. Mediatek haven't used IMG's higher end GPU IPs in their products yet.

Never seen such garbage company in my life. Hopefully it will get bankrupt soon if it doesn't match or beat Snapdragon performance speed.

Pixel's efficiency has been bad ever since they started with their own Tensor chip on Pixel 6 series.

I don't think the Tensor G5/Pixel 10 series will change that despite moving to TSMC-based production and MediaTek modem from Samsung-made components, although some improvement will be there, but not sure in which form and how many percentages will it be better, considering we're still 8 months away from next Google Pixel phone.

Hot take: I really don't care who Google sources the modem from as long as they stop breaking it every third or fourth monthly update. It doesn't have to be perfect (but I'd like it) but I'd really appreciate consistency above all else at this point.
