Expecting N2 to be used by iphone 17 series was always too optimistic. Its mass production timelines are end of next year. That is too late. They could technically release a M series chip around Q2 next year like they did with M4 this year with iPad Pro refreshes. But there is no reason to do it then they will just wait for iphone 18.
2025 chips will use N3P. its anyway best process node by far.

brsdrgn, 31 Dec 2024I agree with you. Luckily Mediatek is in the game and keepi... moreI'm pretty sure he meant competition among foundries to keep silion die/wafer cost low. Samsung struggles because of their foundry, TSMC reigns supreme as a semiconductor maker. A case in point would be SD 8 Gen 1 (Samsung made) vs SD 8+ Gen 1 (TSMC made), same generation of SoCs but felt completely different due to poor thermal performance caused by sub-par manufacturing process.
He wants (I do too) other foundries like Samsung to catch up, compete and keep a demad balance between foundries so TSMC can't gouge prices in times of high demands and low yields.
Don't know how interested you are in this kinda stuff but a great example (though not completely similar) would be the GPUs price gouging during the crypto mining boom.
A kind of sad but completely deserving example of left behind would be Intel, they were too comfortable with some of the most deep pockets as their clients (Intel Macs - Apple) it took them or I don't even if they have passed the 14nm process yet. There too many memes about Intel just adding '+' to there manufacturing nodes and well AMD completely overtook the high performance and efficiency market.
And I don't know if MediaTek can really win against Qualcomm. Mostly because whatever image Mediatek has is all facts they never did focus on performance and such prior to the Dimensity 9000. They actually made some of the least reliable SoCs for years, that is what led to Qualcomms dominion. It's not so much about performance as it is about people just cautious of trusting MediaTek.

Hemedans, 31 Dec 2024Then explain why
1. Sd 4 gen 2 is way cheaper with cortex ... more1. are 4 gen 2 chips cheaper or are those phones just more aggressive in general? That's like saying qualcomm's chips are cheaper cus the Oneplus 13 is only slightly more expensive than the Find X8 for a better screen, battery, an ultrasonic scanner AND better haptics (perhaps the best on android if talking about size only). Besides, Midrange chips are absolutely horrible in terms of value and you can't quantify anything properly at this price range because manufacturers keep doing weird things.
2. And this further illustrates my point. The Dimensity 7200, found in the Nothing Phone 2a or the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+, has better single core performance due to having a Cortex A-715 core. So your point is completely moot as price competitors like the Honor X9b or the Realme 12 Pro have the SD 6 Gen 1 and it's slower for single core. The GPU of the Dimensity is far superior as well. Additionally these phones are built on 4 nm as well, which is done on TSMC's fab.
3. the exynos version phones have the same msrp as they'd have had if they were snapdragon phones. We were talking about flagship phones, and i don't understand why you're bringing midrange data into the conversation where there is no alternate SD chip variant for, let's say, the A55.
Where are you even pulling this data out of anyway? The msrp in different countries definitively shows that pricing has either remained constant, despite chip changes, or actually has increased. I don't understand what you're even talking about here, im not talking about phones after price cuts that can happen at random or NOT at all in some cases, im talking about MSRP which is the recommended pricing and the pricing phones follow for a few months after launch. For example right now the S24 Ultra is as cheap as the Oneplus 12 in my country, and far cheaper than the X100 Pro, does that mean Qualcomm chips are super cheap?
Granted, im not well versed in the budget or lower midrange space, but i do know that you're just spewing nonsense. I'm not fanboying for TSMC, it's just a fact that Samsung doesn't really lower prices for their fab by a significant amount for it to really matter for us consumers. I'd really like it if there was actual competition but if the product is actually inferior and not really cheaper, is that really competing? Think about that.

1. Sd 4 gen 2 is way cheaper with cortex A78 and 4Nm while there is no A78 with even Tsmc 6nm at same price point
2. Sd 6 gen 1 is only Quadcore A78 at its price point, no Quadcore A78 even with Tsmc 6nm
3. Exynos 2400 devices are cheaper than 8 gen 3 and D9300 devices even though Samsung has high margin.
All reputable analysis say otherwise, Samsung foundry is significant cheaper, but you guys with 0 sources are busy Fanboying.

Samsung struggled a lot with efficency of their SoC. Releasing their flagship with different processors in different regions was also a mistake leading reviewers doing side by side comparisons and showing inferiority of Exynos against SD.
However, competition is always good and benefits the users. Buying or not buying eventually up to people...
