HMD Key is official with barebones specs and low price

02 January 2025
It's launching in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand first.

Not quite a good price. Samsung A06 is not far behind in pricing, and it even has 4+64 of storage.

If your budget is that strict, don't even go for this phone either - find a Galaxy A05 or A04. A05 will get more updates (A04 has similar update support as this, possibly better frequency) and both have better specs than this.

Congratz, HMD. For launching the poster phone to highlight the issue of e-waste, albeit negatively.

HMD Key, a key to pure disappointment.

Yet another useless phone by HMD. The brand that makes the same mistakes over and over (sadly). I have nothing bare-bone devices but please use a chip-set that still makes sense today and tomorrow. If you are very short on money, would you be happy with a device that offers barely more than a good old dumb phone? This one will at the best work only for calls and sms. For the rest you will need a lot of patience and "zen" attitude. Even a child will probably get mad and frustrated when using such devices. A few years ago I had a Nokia smartphone with similar specs and already then it was not a smooth experience but it worked. Now, several years later, that similar hardware will have a really hard time. That's just my opinion so if this one is good enough for you then that's fine.

Honestly though, ig it's fine for 60 pounds if you want to idk, throw your phone around for some prank or challenge or something or if you're just itching to drop some cash. Otherwise idk who'll actually benefit from this outside of Africa or third world countries, so it being available in the UK is even stranger.

This falls flat compared to 2020 low end phones launched right before the global chip shortage. That was the time quad core phones became obsolete, for the most part.

If they need to clear up their inventory, their easiest bet is to increase the RAM and storage to the supported maximum, and ask for a sensible pricing. If they don't offer repairability or any form of modularity, unlike their more expensive models, this release makes zero sense.
