Anonymous, 15 Jan 2025Oh, the justifications for not wanting long-term, yearly so... moreYeah the justification seems crazy to people who have 0 knowledge on the topic of how hardware and software works. If I crave for a newer android version ,I'd rather root my phone and run a custom rom (way better than what most manufacturers offer and you can tweak the software based on how old your device is).But If you prefer getting your phone underclocked and slowed down, that's your choice.seems like a lot of people don't agree with you,as apple was hit with a lawsuit based on their scam marketing tactics.

Anonymous, 15 Jan 2025Oh, the justifications for not wanting long-term, yearly so... moreIt's not justifications, when I was young, I was also looking forward to updates. But now they are far more likely to break something then bring something new. Auto-update in the Play Store is off on my phone, my Android TV has a special profile in my router so it can't access the addresses through which updates arrive...
I just want devices that work well when I buy them with the features that I want or need and that continue to work in the exact same manner for the rest of their life. With apps or PC programs or whatever also. It's so refreshing to e.g. use my record player or camera or whatever that isn't trying to be "smart" and will never bother me with notifications, constant updates, new bugs every other week... They just instantly turn on and do what they were made to do, over and over again, regardless of if I use them every day or once a month.

A couple of updated launcher icons and new emojis? Along with a few new bugs on release, some of them rather big, I read...
The point is that yearly smartphone OS "upgrades" are simply BS and shouldn't even exist because any progress has stalled a long time ago. These updates had the tiniest bit of sense around 2010 or so, but now it should be like Windows on PC, one bigger release every 5 years, at best, and in between mostly just security updates and bug fixes.

Anonymous, 13 Jan 2025If I didn't care about the manufacturer sending me upd... moreSure underclocking the chipset in order to keep the battery alive is definetly great idea.Everyone who says old iphones work great on new software ,prolly never used such or just lie. Some people even tried to sue as that's called false advertising.(6 years of software updates, more llike 6 years of underclocking your weak hardware)

User935, 10 Jan 2025Does anyone still care about OS updates? When was the last ... moreIf I didn't care about the manufacturer sending me updates, I'd buy a Pixel 4a and flash them myself. I certainly would not be spending 1300 for the manufacturer to not even send security patches after 4 years, especially not in a world where iPhones from 2017 have the latest OS without incident.

Anonymous, 11 Jan 2025Last time Android had overhaul update was Lollipop or to pu... moreExactly. It was either in Oreo or Pie that we got detailed app permissions, imo that was the last important change.
It's because of this maintenance mode, as you call it, that I don't understand what's all the fuss about getting a new OS version every year. I understand that Google and phone manufacturers want people to think that there's a big release every year and you can get oh so many new features, but that people actually buy that story and see yearly "OS upgrades" as anything more than a nuisance with potential new bugs continues to surprise me.

User935, 10 Jan 2025Does anyone still care about OS updates? When was the last ... moreLast time Android had overhaul update was Lollipop or to put it in numbers it was version 5 close to a decade ago. Oreo (v8) was also a good one but others after were a weak sauce. If you don't count constant UI reshuffling they did with each version, very little has been added that impacts users everyday usage. Could you believe at one time they removed Restart option in power button menu and then put it back in and listed it as a new feature?
Anyway after Android 12 there are no new features worth mentioning and lists are super short. It's like Android itself is in a maintenance mode.

Alright, both the eligible Xperia 1 series now already received Android 15 updates, meaning the remaining lineup waited to be updated are: Xperia 10 VI, Xperia 5 V, and Xperia 10 V. Hopefully sooner than later considering the lineup have dwindled now with Xperia 5, Ace, 10 Plus, and Pro may not return at all

I totally agree. Security updates should be provided for at least 5-6 years, while I actually do not see any really groundbreaking innovations in the recent new Android releases.
Android 14 was said to have substantially improved on battery life (that's at least what "Mrwhoistheboss", a famous Youtube reviewer assumed. But otherwise, I just don't see Android 15 being in a different league as for example Android 11 or 12.

1 or 2 Android versions are ok, but I think they should keep seeding security updates. Its a mighty expensive phone.

I work in IT, and for testing purposes, I use these older devices:
Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite - Android 13, Exynos 9810, 6GB RAM
Samsung Galaxy S9 - Android 10, Exynos 9810, 4GB RAM
Sony Xperia XZ2 - Android 10, Snapdragon 845, 4GB RAM
The S9 is much faster than the Note10 Lite, even though it has less RAM and the same chipset.
When compared to these two, the XZ2 is absolutely flying.
