What about Xperia 5 VI ? When ?
J/k xD

Does anyone still care about OS updates? When was the last time a new Android version brought anything worthwhile? 8, 9 maybe?

Someone mentioned banking apps... My bank's app apparently requires Android 8, my wife's 7, so with my 1 III on Android 13 I'm probably good for 5 more years, 1 V with 15 the next 7 or so.
This tragedy definitely does very little to motivate me to buy a phone from another company so I can have a completely useless higher number in the System info and along with that a hole in the middle of my screen, no SD slot, no 3,5 mm jack, no proper stereo speakers, horrible under-screen fingerprint sensor...

Anonymous, 10 Jan 2025You can still use it for at least 2 more years on Android 1... moreI can agree with you. And I think security patches are the most important.

Anonymous, 10 Jan 2025You can still use it for at least 2 more years on Android 1... moreTrue. I have my Xperia 1 iii stuck on Android 13 but using it well. No hiccups or anything.

This is especially disappointing in the context of a 4 figure phone. Like yes it'll still run fine and you'll still get security updates, but when Samsung are promising 7 and iPhones from 2017 are still getting the latest OS without incident it's just disappointing. At this price point there should be no less than 5 OS upgrades, which should be a bit easier since there hasn't been that many major changes in Android lately.

You can still use it for at least 2 more years on Android 15. May even be better not having it being slowed down by newer Android updates. I really don't see what the problem is. It's not like apps will suddenly stop working on older Android versions.

Elio, 09 Jan 2025Where's that no-3.5-mm-jack/no-sd-card-guy now? Broke? Rage quit from the smartphone market 😃

This does not necessarily make the phone useless in a couple of years.I can assure you that even in 2 years time, this phone will still be able to run all apps and games on the Play store for example, currently a 3 yr old Android 12 software is enough to run any app or game out there

the benefits of a clean android experience don't seem to be that much as far as Sony's concerned. Taking this long for updates when the skin is thinner than a fashion model is just.... cringe.

cyber, 09 Jan 2025sony phones expected lifespan unfortunately is pretty shortyou wrong.. i have 3 set of xperia Xz2 ( 6 years +)
all work flawlesly. LCD color still look good no any dead pixel.

That's why I did not purchase Sony.
Pricier than my S23 Ultra, MicroSD on the plus side, but that's it for my usage!
Support duration ? May 2023, January 2025, that's just too short for the price asked.
The hardware is more than okay for a few years, that's commercial bullsh!t 🤡
Sony WAKE UP, that's about god damn time now!
And improve quality because on Reddit, users feedback aren't the best, again, for the price asked.
Even WH-1000XM5 are so prone to hinge problem ... That's insane.
