iPhone 17 Air's shocking thinness revealed

The "Air" is NOT going to perform any better.
There's a reason the Plus is a flop and that is PEOPLE WANT SMALLER PHONES.
Not only have all Plus models performed much worse than the Mini, the Mini numbers had the even smaller SE cannibalising the sales.
Apple's reading of the market was dumb when they discontinued the Mini. That's the reality. The 12 Mini alone outsold the entire S21 line-up combined. That alone should give you a hint.
Making an iPhone "Air" with a giant screen will face the same issues the Plus has: people who want a giant iPhone already have the Max. And since neither the Air nor the Plus were cheap, for those prices people rather fork out the money for the top tier version of a kitchen tray.
If Apple wasn't dumb, they'd be bringing back the Mini instead. And NOT releasing an even smaller SE alongside it.

Why can't they come out with a phone that have no camera island and it be flat surface in the rear ? Like going more slim but cameras still stick out of the frame.
How is it even practical to have it more slim ? So the phone gets more fragile ?
Also why can't they have the phone without camera island as the full rear side be flat ? They cant say they have no space when they do as they can make the phone slimmer.
Making the phone more slim that makes it less durable means more chance to get money from people on repairs. That is the reason they wont say and think a some different reason.
Just like removing 3.5mm jack and SD card reason was that they dont have space. Even tough phones have gone a lot bigger from the time the phones had these features. Like phones 10 years ago were a lot smaller and even cameras didnt stick out of the rear.. Never mind that all the tech like chips and everything on motherboard were a lot larger back then.

My five-year old Samsung Tab S5e was already 5.5mm thick. Nothing to shout about.

Who's asking for this? My current phone is 7.4" thin and it's already a hassle to pick up off a desk (I don't use cases), so 5.5" would be ridiculously finicky to handle for no redeeming benefit whatsoever, except for Apple to brag about 'inventing' the thinnest phone!

I rarely comment on iPhone and Pixel articles because both phone have long software support, just like Android bestselling Samsung flagship.
Chinese flagship is a garbage, becauss it has short software support and embarassing ugly big circle camera island.
Thoughts and prayers for 37 people worldwide who still use chinese flagship.

Gsmarena has pages of history at it's disposal
Why is the writer of this article impressed by this thinness that still cannot match 2014 oppo/Vivo technology?? (In terms of dimensions)
And I'm going to bet 1million dollars apple won't be using the updated si/c battery chemistry technology to cram maybe a 4000-5000mah battery in the 5mm body

Yes, it could be a tapered design, but they are most likely referring to the camera bump being like, two-thirds of the thickness of the phone. It would be highly unlikely for Apple to move back to the tapered design after flattening literally every other device they make.

Wait wait wait, it's not 5.5mm thin. It's 5.5mm at its thinnest point. Meaning the actual thickness is thicker than that. It also means that the design will be tapered or rounded at the edges to make it feel thinner.
This is nothing too be excited about.
Now the all eSIM only is going to be interesting, if it were correct. We know that when Apple does something, the rest follows. No headphone jack, no charger in box. Expect eSIM only phones becoming the norm within 5 years or so.

And the people comparing it to the older Android are simply pointing out that from a engineering achievement perspective, this 5.5mm is not that impressive if someone did better a decade back, not to mention they managed a headphone jack in. You're fighting everyone as though you got money invested in the success of this supposed thin device.
