Wait wait wait, it's not 5.5mm thin. It's 5.5mm at its thinnest point. Meaning the actual thickness is thicker than that. It also means that the design will be tapered or rounded at the edges to make it feel thinner.
This is nothing too be excited about.
Now the all eSIM only is going to be interesting, if it were correct. We know that when Apple does something, the rest follows. No headphone jack, no charger in box. Expect eSIM only phones becoming the norm within 5 years or so.

[deleted post]Chill dude, you miss the obvious premise here, this is just a stunt by Apple. And the people comparing it to the older Android are simply pointing out that from a engineering achievement perspective, this 5.5mm is not that impressive if someone did better a decade back, not to mention they managed a headphone jack in. You're fighting everyone as though you got money invested in the success of this supposed thin device.

Ellen Dale, 11 Jan 2025Out of the 4 models, one is deemed to be "lowest-selli... moreIt would make sense for Apple to change the lineup, if the Air becomes the bestseller. I wouldn't think about "shaking up" the lineup, as in removing the base model, or the Pros, but tweaking them in a way that makes them more enticing for consumers, as well as more profitable for Apple. I have to say, that most decisions are not made from one year statistics alone, though. They will definitely want to wait for two years, at least, to see the overall trends and to make the 2nd gen Air better (maybe adding a higher mAh battery, or adding a second/third rear camera)

I mean, it is quite impressive, but seeing the iPhone SE go downhill I can't help but wonder what compromises they did to achieve that thinness. Also, Motorola dared with the Moto Z years ago to make a phone as thin as this, so this isn't really news either. It had pretty bad battery life btw, with 2600mAh of battery capacity and the Snapdragon 820/821.

Out of the 4 models, one is deemed to be "lowest-selling"
So just say this year, if the air model surpasses the sales of other models, does that mean they will discontinue or change them?
The plus being the lowest selling makes sense due to price and if anyone has money to buy the plus will just go for the pro model, that doesn't sacrifice much on the battery and gain display and camera upgrades while being one of the best of the lineup and holds more "value" socially.

By the way, the thinnest, real smartphone crown goes to the Magic V Purse, which measures 4.3 mm, when unfolded.
