elmarcello, 19 hours agoThank you for the explanation, could never have thought thi... moreiMessage+FaceTime+other apps in the Apple ecosystem do replace the WhatsApp, Telegram, or Line experience elsewhere. They're free, but only if you have an iPhone of course. The US never had any real reason to use third-party messaging apps since SMS and even MMS was always free or extremely cheap here, while data was expensive until 2015 or so. In the rest of the world it's reversed. In fact, while Apple does call their service iMessage, the app on your phone is just called Messages, and it's the same as the RCS/MMM/SMS app.
As to your other point, while you can do some things like group chats using MMS, it's a kludgy experience with file size limitations. Reactions were broken until Apple rolled out RCS. For video calls Apple did make it possible to invite people to FaceTime calls, but that was only after everyone switched to Zoom.

i just a bit of wonder, how is Google doing in American market? Do they have a green bubble issue too? After all pixels are popular phones too.
and i don't seem to get that apple messaging specifics too: is it payed service like sms/mms were? How did it become so obligatory?
We in Europe do mostly rely on Viber, whattsapp and telegram. Cause a no native messing app like sms, mms would provide that multimedia richness. People are doing all kind of stuff with those: texting, chatting, groups, video calls, file transfer. Is that aplle message so rich in features too?

Anonymous, 20 Feb 2025Your so called “worse version” still performs better than 9... moreYou are right for this price point Apple kills Android competition regarding chip performance. But entire phone is complete garbage. 1 shitty camera, shitty old screen, basic RAM and sotrage, useless iOS, small battery, no fast charging, you literally buying phone with 2017 specs in 2025 but you paying premium for it 🙂 For this price you can find last year Android flagships and they would destroy this garbage 16e in every aspect but raw chip performance. Which would be noticeable only in benchmarks and some few games.

elmarcello, 20 Feb 2025Could never have possibly thought something like that could... moreIt's culturally improved a bit in the last few years, but you can get left out of group chats if you don't have an iPhone. Third party messaging apps aren't really a thing here (a fair number of people have WhatsApp, but only use it to message people internationally), so the green bubble stigma is real. What's worse is that for many years Apple deliberately downgraded the SMS/MMS experience to make it look like Android users were to blame, instead of Apple overly compressing media files. Always fun to explain to people that the green bubble isn't to punish Android users (we have no shame anyway), but to punish someone with an iPhone for not being able to indoctrinate all of their friends and family.

What if some people would find android more comfortable?
We in school (rather south of Europe) didn't usually have expensive phones anyways, but it was about using it to its fullest: like having music, books, programs, shooting videos, pictures, etc.

Anonymous, 20 Feb 2025Smart move from Apple, but that amount of cost cutting stil... moreTruly so, i must admit.
i mean, not that it's a bad phone, besides it's ecosystem - it's up to personal liking. But the features/price ratio is doubtful. For that much you can easily get Vivo x200, a much better alternative.
what i sheerly like is that apple weren't any shy or confused to make only one camera design. It's true and honest, and those ultrawide were never really good. I could only wish android devices would probably ommit those 2/8mp modules.

Ofcause it has... Sammy FE also has a binned chip (if I'm not mistaken), also those focused on price look at the price of the FE WITHOUT discount. 16e comes in cheaper in 128 & 256. The camera tech needs to be tested thoroughly, the worst trade off is the screen tho, 60Hz with no dynamic island is a Diabolical thought in 2025. Just saying we can't go on what ifs...

Smart move from Apple, but that amount of cost cutting still can't explain the €599 price tag, should be €399 at most

Anonymous, 20 Feb 2025Bro you haven't heard of Google Nexus and Hawuei phone... moreIt doesn’t matter what 2015 phones had. What matters is that Samsung’s top phone in the A series midrange lineup lacks a couple of features compared to this 16e.
iPhone SE launched at $429, but now you can get it for $100-200 on Amazon. The same will happen with iPhone 16e, it will be < $300 & no Samsung/Google phone will be able to undercut that brand new.
Samsung phones don’t do well in the used market. Most people buy them brand new.
THINK DIFFERENT. 💡

It all depends on one’s use needs.
I’d be perfectly fine with the 16e for mundane tasks and an iPad for anything that works better on a larger screen or needs more processing.
For gaming alone I’d rather have an iPad mini than any iPhone because of the larger bezels, better battery life and the screen size is just right so controls aren’t too far away from my thumbs.
