Apple says its C1 modem isn't to blame for the iPhone 16e's lack of MagSafe

To put things into perspective regarding hardware pricing - my current realme 13 Pro+ came with a total of 4 cameras, 2 of which with high-quality Sony LYT sensors; fluid notchless 6,7-inch ROUNDED 120Hz AMOLED display with great colors and peak brightness, 512GB onboard storage chip, 12GB RAM chip, NFC chip and 5200Mah battery, an 80-watt SuperVOOC charger and all the rest bells and whistles of modern day midranger for about 400EUR retail price and yet Realme still managed to do a profit of the sale. In other words the hardware of the new iPhone 16e-waste is at most like 100USD total manufacturing price. So yeah, "cost cutting" measures my bass, Apple are simply as greedy, manipulative and anti-consumer as they have always been, if not even more...

xPandamon, 21 Feb 2025They use their own modem in their cheapest current model be... moreIt's a 1st gen product so it's bound to have some bugs and problems that haven't been fixed. But they have been developing it for a long time now so any bugs shouldn't be showstopping.

Long time ago Apple had LC desktop computers, so people translated this name to 'low cost' or 'less coprocessor'. Nowadays 16E could be translated to eradicated ;-)

They should've called this phone the iPhone 16C for how many things have been cut from it just to save on costs, and maximize profits.

Yup, and this website is the best example for that

My gripe with the new iPhone 16e isn't about some features that are lower or omitted than the regular or Plus version of 16 (or even 15 vanilla series), considering compared to its spiritual predecessor, the SE 3, there were indeed numerous upgrades (battery life, better chipset, better display, USB-C, Face ID if you prefer that way, even larger screen-to-body ratio lesser bezels, cleaner design just like iPhone 4/4s as it looks like a modern revival of 4/4s, new tech of C1 modem). My gripe is how they set the price when the target markets are those who wants an "affordable iPhone" by Apple standard and wanting an iPhone only by legal means, considering the SE 3 and iPhone 14 series have been phased out completely and removed from Apple Store (unless refurbished), making 16e is the most affordable iPhone right now, alongside the 15 series, yet, Apple has increased the minimum bar of price higher than some people could tolerate, and 600 USD felt too high (500 USD could have been better IMO), let alone the Euro pricing or outside North America, that is even more unattainable and too stingy. I'm all in for an affordable iPhone as the iPhone has its specific audience, but the iPhone 16e compromising price is something not well and had to be considered twice for the new buyers;

SadSoul, 21 Feb 2025Blame goes to the customers who buy this e-waste looking at... moreIt’s crazy how fast the term e-waste got appropriated by people to mean “a phone I don’t like”. I agree that the iPhone 16e isn’t good value at $600 when you can get a used iPhone 15 for only $500 (plus no child labor b/c it’s not a new phone), but calling this phone e-waste makes no sense when it’ll probably get 7 years of updates and still be usable without any lag

You are the illogical ones here. Those magnets cost the same as those 2mp macro cameras, much less than whatever camera apple would have included if they were to. And i bet many sheep fell for the 2 in 1 camera nonsense too. You cant do any such nonsense marketing about magsafe without having those magnets.

They use their own modem in their cheapest current model because it will perform worse than the one in their other models and costs less. It is not correlated to them cheaping out on many other specs of that e-waste iPhone.

The biggest issue is the price to feature ratio.
Also, in some parts of the world is ridiculously close in price to the regular 16.

iPhone 16 is selling at 63k(69k without) after bank discounts in India and 16e's launch price is 60k, why would anyone buy 16e. It's just a waste phone to say atleast.

This article is in very poor taste. People thought that at least the mag safe would stay not because they lack logic or they're dumb, but simply because apple had already cut corners everywhere else and for its price (a little over 1,000$CAD) you can buy a used like new iPhone 15pro.
