L973, 12 hours agoHow does the vanilla (overdue 2024) have a slower chip than... moreLong story short, since iPad 5 released in 2017, Apple has positioned base iPad as the cheapest offering of iPad family.
iPad Air and iPad Mini fill the slot that was vacated by base iPad for 5 years before iPad 5 was released and Apple dropped its tier to lowest. Base iPad was a higher tier of iPad series from the OG iPad (iPad 1) to iPad 4. The OG iPad Air then was released as both direct and indirect replacement for iPad 4 back in 2013 (direct in terms of years refreshment of iPads, indirect in term of lineage and serial). Tbf, it was a quite confusing year for iPads on those years when iPad base and Air was consolidated into one serial in 2013 then Apple separated them again in 2017/2019.

The iPad Air still feels awful for what it costs, thanks to its ancient 60Hz display (iPad pros have been on 120Hz since 2017)
Should definitely buy an old gen iPad Pro instead

How does the vanilla (overdue 2024) have a slower chip than the Mini (2024)? I don't follow.

When they're comparing it to the M1 model, you know that the bump up from the M2 is fairly minor.
