EU says port-less devices are okay, opening the door for Apple

19 March 2025
Apple reportedly though of leaving out the USB-C port from the iPhone 17 Air, but didn't because it was worried that the European Commission wouldn't approve.

The day I can no longer have a mobile phone with physical ports is the day I stop using mobile phones.

Also, bravo EU. You had one job and you failed at it, spectacularly. As usual.

DarlingYext, 18 hours agoDoes anyone even want port-less devices?Hey! Favorites, and no buttons! It's time to take it to the next level, of course, leaving only the power button or a single capacitive button for manual tasks, and nothing else! And the best part is, since Apple is releasing a portless iPhone, all other manufacturers will follow suit.

eu don't deserve to use smartphones

I once heard Apple described as 'obsessed with minimalism to the detriment of functionality'. For example, no home button, one button mouse, et al. This is just another example of this. Apple will start by removing the charge port. Then they will market (not innovate or invent) an existing method of wireless charging, market it as the latest greatest thing since the iPod, and their fans will lap it up and buy a Apple ChargeTek charging pad for every room in the house.

So no more wired headphones/earphones, or wired data transfer, awful move EU, yet again.

veryangrynerd, 17 hours agoIf a portless device can do 100w wireless and can create a ... more100W wireless is already possible, but Apple will never do that.

EU usb c rule has never applied to devices that only charge wirelessly.

Yeah they are going to use water-resistant as an excuse to implement it. While making the device as disposable as much as possible. and increase the price.
"Why not just don't use apple device?"
Yes, but remember that every other brand will copy apple

we all knew this was coming, caring about the environment is just an excuse for companies and governments to incentivize planned obsolescence. Better numbers in the short term but far worse in the long term.

                      Blackpilled forever.....

I mean, besides Apple's greedy motive, I expected this to be a standard, but it shouldn't be for companies that force slow wireless charging.

DarlingYext, 18 hours agoDoes anyone even want port-less devices?I've been screaming (metaphorical) my lungs out for more and better ports LoL

Nobody with a functional brain in the current state of devices would want a portless device.

Physical connectors are a non-negotiable feature.

                            Oh my, EUuuuuuuuuuu

They took away earphone jack that was ok, now they wanna take the Type c port? Df is wrong with apple, man just take the whole screen and give us buttons while your at it.

No way… I cannot believe this is happening.

“That is not the case, however. European Commission press officer Federica Miccoli confirmed to 9to5Mac that a device that supports only wireless charging is perfectly within the rules:

‘Yes. Since, such radio equipment cannot be recharged via wired charging, it does not need to incorporate the harmonised (wired) charging solution’.”

                                    😱😫

DarlingYext, 18 hours agoDoes anyone even want port-less devices? If a portless device can do 100w wireless and can create a direct connection for data transfer with another device with transfer at 2GBps+ why wouldn't you want a portless device?
