... moreOof. Clearly you have no standards for photo quality, as your reply demonstrates. You don't want a zoom lens, but you're happy with zooming in for distant shots with digital zoom? I guess if you don't care about image quality whatsoever...
Then you suggest to capture a landscape shot with the UW lens, I should just "tilt up" so there isn't as much ground in the shot... Now the subject is off center, even more distorted, and the picture is 75% sky. Great.
Seriously why is this complete amateur trying to give suggestions for camera hardware... lol.

Nick Tegrataker, 23 Mar 2025I've been finding myself shooting photos quite often w... moreThank you very much for the insights. I like your approach to this step by step.
I might seem critical towards people who uses the zoom camera or periscopes. I don't have any complaints about those. I have complaints about those who criticize the improvements about the uw and embracing the industry towards zooming in further and further.
If there's enough space and if I want to highlight a particular subject/object, ofc I'd not use uw for that.
I stated the necessary scenarios where you can make use of uw to prove that it's not an unnecessary sensor on the phones.
Many brands ignored and paid attention to the periscope so far. I'm glad about this and I'll make use of it when I switch to a new phone this year. But they kept forgetting about uw(again I put aside oppo find x6 pro and nubia ultra series)
I disliked the small sizes and squeezing high amount pixels. 1/2.76 with 50mp is just nonsense. Same would go to the front facing camera as well. Despite all my critics, I was one of the people who liked when samsung used 12mp sensor for selfie. It was doing a great job considering its size. Same goes for uw. I'm honestly find with 20mp.
I disliked trsh video quality on uw, especially at nights. I disliked the paint looking pixels altered with ai even to a worse quality.
Yet, uw was usable for me when I was in a narrow area and helped me squeeze more objects.
I was in a scientific museum recently with a tour guide. He was rushing a little bit and I wanted to read the information below the objects. Uw was perfect for this. I squeezed the text and object together while keeping both in focus. Text is readable and the object is visible. I wasn't looking for a quality photo. I will read and delete later. For some who things 'well, you could shoot two seperate'. It's just good to see the object and read the text at the same time and save some space.

Since it's not going global, we could just wait for it to come out in the form of the Vivo X300 Pro. It's usually just goes back and forth between specs.

... moreI've been finding myself shooting photos quite often with my S23 Ultra after finding a stable GCam port for it, and so far more than 50% of them were taken with either 3x or 10x telephoto cameras. I wish the sensors were bigger (especially for the 3x) and I miss the shallow depth of field my dedicated camera + lens combo provides, but they provide a good amount of perspective compression and give resulting images a certain look that cannot be replicated with the main wide-angle camera.
Don't get me wrong, I do make use of its UWA camera whenever I need to - When I can't take a step back or when I need to fit more into the frame. It's just I use the other three cameras far more often. That said, I'm glad that Vivo is putting more effort into the UWA module again, and I would absolutely use it more often if its image quality was comparable to that of the main camera.

I'm looking forward to comparisons. I hope vivo will smash all the rest again so that these PITA people are gonna swllow all their words.
We're seeing repetitive, safe, non-improvement approaches from the rest of the industry. Only the Chinese manufacturers are doing sth. Yet, these PITAs have critics.
Probably have no job, no money, and have a good level of ocd getting obsessed over bs stuff amd details.
We're going to see the results soon.

I'm making use if other sensors as well. I meant capturing the scenery inside a room. Maybe there are 5 or more paintings and I wanna fit all of them. There's no spece behind me to step back. So what am I gonna do? Zoom in on each and take photo one by one? I capture all with uw and done.
"UW if too wide for those and it makes everything look smaller unless you are taking photos of dinosaur bones."
Whats too wide? You clearly didn't use good uw. What about the one in vivo x90pp or oppo find x6 pro. They shot very well. Human eye can perceive the scene and understand the proportion of objects to each other. Uw is not about giving full details. It's about showing sth bigger
"50mm is also better for portraits and taking cat photos. 85mm is perfect for zoos. UW is nearly useless. It's a waste to use LYT818 for UW, you will end up zooming to 22mm to use it and we all know that sensor shows its weakness at 2X zoom."
What an i. people are these. I wish one of the the engineers from vivo was here and would reply this comment. There's always an i. in the way when ath new comes out...
Whats even surprising that these anonymous accounts don't get notification like an account would get about replies. So, that means they have no job, lazy internet a... checking the posts' comments over and over to see what reply they got. How many tabs are open in your browser? I'm sure many.

"3x zoom i use all the time. it's perfect for portraits, and anything you can't walk up to."
You seem to be very smart, using that smaller module. You seem to be lazy as well as you can't walk up to so many things. I walk up to so many things and never try to shoot objects which are far. Uw is perfect capturing entire height of the trees. Uw gives muchy better sense of environmental awareness in a photo.
"Animals, museum exhibits behind a barrier, anything across the street or further. It's also way better than UW for landscapes."
In zoo, you can clearly make use of zoom. I haven't mentioned zoo! Have you ever tried taking the picture of the object along with text ij the bottom while standing next to it? You're clearly not a museum person or don't even know how they are. You forget about crowds, you forget about tiny spaces. You'll have little chance to step back further and try to capture the object before anyone going to step in front of you. With uw camera you can stay close and capture.
"With UW for a landscape shot, 50% of the photo is the ground and your own feet, plus everything is distorted and looks smaller, defeating the point of an epic landscape shot. Panorama with telephoto lens is perfect."
Wow. Iq level in the sky. You can't tilt the phone looking upward? I was in a historical church with beautiful architecture all over. I simply looked up with uw and captured all the roof and the pillars. What are you even talking about? You admitted yourself you don't use uw. You clearly don't even know how to use it. Making excuses about it. The distortion is not in the center! It's on the edges! Easy fix! Take your next phone to a repairman and take out the uw cam entirely..
"Anything an UW camera can do, panorama mode does better with the main or telephoto lens. I've never used the UW."
Thr above statement shows the level of ignoranc.

Uw is great when you visit museums. When you need to squeeze to your view if you can't step back. It's good to show landscapes, capturing buildings. I fix distortion later. Uw has many good uses.
I don't understand the whole point of zooming into far far far objects. Why you need to zoom that much? Are you watching universe, observing distant galaxies?
Samsung started it with 120x space zoom bs. And still whole industry has been following without caring about uw.
When they release a good uw hardware. Then these i. comes out and starts questioning.

For telephoto lens
Focal length equivalent = Sqrt(36^2+24^2)* focal length / sensor size
= 43.266 * 25.10 / 11.44 = 94.93 mm
For main lens
Focal length equivalent = 43.266 * 8.72 / 16.384 = 23.03 mm
Zoom level at which the lens should switch = 4.12x
(focal length numbers are obtained from the EXIF info of camera samples provided in GSMArena review)

The LYT-818 sensor at 14mm is such a waste. How many 14mm photos do you guys take? It makes everything too small. Most people use 22mm to 50mm as the most used focal range. This is why phonemakers put the weakest sensor at UW because rarely anyone uses it. Vivo sacrificed a 1" sensor to put 2 small ones for no reason.
