Google Pixel 10 to get an overhauled camera system, 10 Pro Fold sees minor changes

There's no justification for downgrading the primary sensor in order to add a telephoto sensor. Most people use the primary sensor the most and buy Pixels because they want the best possible photos. Now, people will have to buy the Pro or Pro XL to achieve this. As suggested, this is just like the 9a with a telephoto sensor. Google is doing what Chinese OEMs began doing years ago - stick as many lenses in as possible and see what happens to sales. The average person wouldn't look at the model of the sensors.

I think Google is seeing how well this tactic of quantity over quality will work. 3 physical sensors on paper is better than 2 and Samsung has done this on their base Galaxy S for years now so I think Google is experimenting here, possibly their main objective is to steal more sales from base Galaxy S25 buyers but I am sure some of these prospective base P10 buyers might say screw it and get a base Pro instead of they are more camera heavy users.

Seems like a stupid move seeing as the Pro already caters for those who want a telephoto lens. Two good sensors are better than two worse ones plus a telephoto that is nice to have but not essential for base Pixel users.

vik457, 03 Apr 2025Why does google insist on sole 5x telephoto? One part of me thinks this is deliberate in order to make the Pro more enticing to fork up the couple hundred more but if done deliberately so, why even add the third lens to the base model, making it in the average person's view, near equal to the Pro thus making the Pro look less enticing. I'm not really understanding Google's logic here.

"Slapping a tiny telephoto camera won't be better than digitally cropping 2x or even 3x from a larger primary sensor, especially in low-light conditions. "
Not true. The amount of light that is captured from a distant object per exposure time depends on the effective lens diameter= focal length/ f-number. And even if the effective lens diameter of the tele camera is bad, then even in low light conditions certain objects can still look better like for example lamps. Smartphone tele cameras often have a larger effective lens diameter than the main camera.
